About this Cook
I'm a social scientist living near Washington, DC. Lots of extracurriculars in our family, so brand new recipes are tried on the weekends when I can pay attention.
My favorite things to cook
Indian, Thai, Italian and things with wonderful seasonings. Also French, especially southern/Provencal French foods, is becoming a new focus. In the summer I love fresh tomatoes, corn, peaches, berries, and other locally grown ingredients. We need to pay attention to calories and cholesterol at our house. I generally like low-sugar-low-white carb meals.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My family traditions for food were very mixed, including eastern European/Jewish foods. My mother has always been an excellent home cook. Husband's family taught me many wonderful midwest USA goodies, especially vegetables and mashed potatoes.
My cooking triumphs
Ethnic meals, especially east Asian and northern Italian, made for parties or as thank you gifts. A whole baked chicken, fully boned then stuffed with prosciutto, pine nuts and veal was particularly spectacular.
My cooking tragedies
Several years spent with an oven that did not really work correctly left me with many tragedies!

Chicken Makhani (Indian Butter Chicken)
This is excellent! And boy does it make the house smell good. Very full flavored. Serve with a "quiet" rice dish, as the gravy from the chicken provides all the flavor you need.

Deep-Fried Turkey
This was the best Thanksgiving turkey we ever had. It was uniformly moist and juicy inside with beautiful firm meat, crackly and brown outside, and not in the least greasy. We will do it again next year!

Gary's Stuffed Mushrooms
Very tasty. Recipe needs to NOTE that mushroom stems need to be reserved. Do not need as much melted butter as indicated. Can absorb a lot of red pepper/black pepper/other seasonings successfully. Will also make a good dip for crackers or celery, perhaps with a bit less stuffing mix.
