About this Cook
Basically, I"m a tinkerer. I like to try new things and I love experimenting with new variations of regular ingredients
My favorite things to cook
Baking is my favorite reason for being in the kitchen. Presenting someone you love with a handmade sweet is the best.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We have our own cookbook full of family recipes and genealogy that is printed up every few years for family reunions. It's wonderful to have the recipes all together and to be able to see pictures of the men and women who made them.
My cooking triumphs
I used to bake professionally, so cooking in large numbers is my "triumph".
My cooking tragedies
When I was just starting out I made a pie crust that was so tough we joked that I could have eaten the filling, washed out the crust and reused it.

Baked Potato Soup
I really enjoyed this recipe! It was flavorful and not as heavy as other potato soups I've had in the past. I didn't change much, just that since I use center cut bacon I didn't have much drippings so I added a pat of butter. Also, I added the bacon and the cheese and fresh chopped scallions (In lieu of parsley) at the end instead of garnish and the cheese really added to the creaminess. Will definitely make this one again!

Creamy Rice Pudding
Rice pudding is one of my comfort foods and I really enjoyed this recipe, even though I usually prefer baked puddings. The only thing I did differently was use cooked rice from the night before to speed things a bit. It was wonderful, creamy and fast!

Almond Maple Granola
This. Was. Amazing! It was my first ever attempt at making granola and I'm so glad I did! I'll never go back to the lifeless box stuff again! I followed the recipe more or less as printed. I used less coconut, as I only had half a bag anyway (This is a great recipe for using up those leftover nuts, seeds and coconut!) and I substituted pecans for the sunflower seeds. I also added a teaspoon of vanilla and some cinnamon to the wet ingredients. Like other reviewers have noted, it is a bit sweet, so I will most likely adjust the next batch, but it's really awesome as a yogurt mix in. I'm also going to experiment with cutting the recipe with corn or bran flakes to make my own breakfast cereal since DH burns through cereal like there's going to be an embargo.
