I love this frosting as is, and half butter/half shortening! It colors so well, pipes easily, and spreads smoothly. Thank you for a great recipe!

Four Egg Yellow Cake

Reviewed: May 25, 2009
This is my favorite yellow cake recipe! It's so moist because of the shortening and bakes to a tall beautiful cake! Very easy to ice as well. I highly recommend following directions to a T. It always comes out well for me!

Cold Tuna Macaroni Salad

Reviewed: May 21, 2009
This was delish, reminds me of the pasta salad my Grandma makes. I didnt have any Italian dressing in the house, so I used "Italian Dressing Mix" from this site and it came out great! Very flavorful. I also threw in a diced cucumber for something extra. Thank you for a yummy salad. My bf couldn't stop eating it!

Lemon Filling

Reviewed: May 21, 2009
This filling is great! I use it every time I make a yellow cake, and I have no problem with it going out the sides of the cake. A trick I use is to make a "barrier" around the edge of the bottom layer with butter cream, and only put filling in to the edge of the butter cream ring, not over. Happy Baking! Thanks for a great recipe!

Italian Dressing Mix

Reviewed: May 21, 2009
I cut this in half since there's just two of us, and did not have any garlic salt so I subbed garlic powder, skipped the onion powder and thyme (didn't have them) and it came out great! I sprinkled a bit of Parmesan into the finished dressing and used it for Cold Tuna Macaroni Salad (on this site.) Thanks for a quick, simple, delicious recipe!

Chocolate Mousse Pie

This was phenomenal! I made this for the Passover seder we went to (with a special crust) and it was devoured! The coffee really makes the flavor of the chocolate. It was phenomenal! Definitely chill overnight. Thanks for the great recipe!

Passover Apple Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 6, 2009
I made this to practice the dessert for Seder night, and I was skeptical when I making this recipe. I had to press the "bottom" part of the batter into the pan, it was so thick! And when I took it out of the oven, it was very oily (what appeared like oil). I let it cool for a few hours, and when the boyfriend tasted it, he said it didn't taste like Pesach and he would've believed me if I had told him it wasn't! That's the highest compliment, seeing as he dreads Passover food. Thank you!

Balsamic Bruschetta

Reviewed: Mar. 30, 2009
This was a delicious blend of flavors! I prepared the tomato mixture with 1/4 of a white onion in with it, and an extra garlic clove. I placed it in the fridge for two hours after adding the olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper. Before heating the bread, I drizzled some olive oil, garlic powder, dried basil, and some oregano over it. It was amazing! Thank you!

Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes

I added the entire can of pumpkin instead of just a cup and didn't change any other amounts. It came out delicious -- we had a hard time waiting for them to cool to eat! Of course, cooled off and with frosting they are amazing! Thank you so much for this recipe!

Tuna Noodle Casserole from Scratch

This was really fantastic, though it took longer to put together than I anticipated. I would add A LOT more pepper into the white sauce. Other than that, it was a big hit and reheats well. Thanks!

Grandma's Lemon Meringue Pie

Reviewed: Mar. 6, 2009
Phenomenal and easy to follow recipe. My first time making lemon meringue pie, and it came out GREAT the first time! My boyfriend thought it was to die for. The term "juice of 2 lemons" can be a bit misleading; the second time I made the recipe I used more lemon juice (still two lemons!) and it came out WAY too tart. Just a bit of warning! Other than that, and the tips on the site, it was great! Thanks for sharing!

Glazed Apple Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 15, 2009
These were delicious, although it was not quite what I was looking for in an apple cookie. Still, I brought them to a friend's house and they disappeared! They have just the right amount of spice. Remember to chop the apples VERY finely, even chunks will stick out unattractively.

Cake Mixes from Scratch and Variations

Reviewed: Jan. 3, 2009
This cake is wonderful! I followed other reviewers and used 1/2 oil in lieu of shortening with 1 1/4 milk. It was not too sweet of a cake and I loved using only one bowl. My bf loves this with the Chocolate Fudge Buttercream icing from this site, and he hates sweets! Thank you for this great recipe.

Sugar Cookie Frosting

Very good! I used the sugar syrup as another reviewer posted and it came out delicious, smooth, and glossy! I wasn't successful in piping out the icing, but that is likely just my inexperience.

Soft Christmas Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2008
These are delicious! I followed other reviewers' advice of using real butter, lowering the temp to 350, and only 3 cups of flour. Well, although this is the first time I've ever made cut-out cookies, it took forever to roll them out. That extra cup of flour I didn't use I wound up using to roll it out. Despite that, they came out tasty! :) Just keep an eye on them in the oven.
