I am 24 and single, living with one room-mate. I enjoy cooking because it brings people together. I love it when someone eats the food that I prepared and says that it's delicious! My mom rarely ever cooked and we always either ate out or picked something up, so I guess I got tired of that after 18 years! I love eating at home. Food tastes so much better when it is prepared at home and you know what went in to making it. I'm somewhat of a beginner when it comes to cooking, but I'm always trying to learn more. I believe that practice is the only thing that can make you better! I usually have good luck with new items, I don't know if anything I've ever made wasn't edible. I love anything with onions or tomatoes. I usually prefer my veggies raw though...the freshness of them is amazing!
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake cakes, I made my first red velvet this past Christmas. I didn't tell anyone that I was making it...that way if it was a disaster I could throw it away and no one would ever know! Sad thing though, the cake gave me migraines. After some "googling", red and yellow food coloring is known to cause migraines. I've been searching for a color alternative...I think that I'm going to try beet juice, just a tiny bit, as to try not to flavor the cake at all. If that doesn't work, I guess it's only "white" velvet for me! I also love to cook anything that involves onions. I love them! Maybe not so good for the breath, but if it tastes good, it's worth it!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I suppose the Holidays! As I've gotten older, I get to take more of a part in helping prepare dishes for our family get-togethers. When family members make sure that I'm bringing some of my "signature dishes", it makes me feel good! My "tater" salad is always a hit. The concept that I've come up with is "tater" salad is Southern style and "potato" salad is Northern style.
My cooking triumphs
When I baked my first red velvet...it was actually my first any cake from scratch. Even though it gave me migraines, it was still delicious and everyone loved it! :-)
My cooking tragedies
I made a "white" velvet on Valentine's Day, but didn't think about adding a little extra water in place of the red dye. It was sooo dry! I took it to a family event, and everyone acted so nice about it...BUT, they all had to eat it with ice cream in order to get it down! I felt horrible!
