Hello, I'm the Barnbrat around here. I'm a stay-at-home mom, and I'm told this is the life of luxury. Yeah, I definitely goofed up somewhere along the way. Instead of luxury, we are raising most of our own meats and veggies. It's turning out to be considerably interesting. My next project will be beekeeping this spring.
My favorite things to cook
I love making home made breads. Lately, my daughter and I finally conquered an old failure - pie crust. We learned something with crust. If you fail on the first attempt or two, then study and ask before trying again. Chances are you missed a tip or two, so keep asking and then try again.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We grow three gardens every year. My loving daughter, who is truly a treasure, comes to help me preserve this food every fall. We spend days home-canning from every row we grew.
My cooking triumphs
When canning season is finished, there's such a sense of accomplishment, especially when I take in a visual inventory of my pantry shelves.
My cooking tragedies
Is there a bigger let down than that crackling sound coming from the pressure cooker? All that time and effort goes to waste in a single moment, and you have no idea how many jars have broken until the cycle is complete hours later. Fallen bread is a disappointment, but at least that can be used as barnyard treats for the chickens, turkeys, pigs, cattle, and peacocks.
