I have been blessed with the ability to be the "Domestic Diva" for my family of 8. In addition to my wonderful husband, I have 2 girls and 4 boys in my household. Although 4 of my kids are stepchildren, they definitely influence my cooking because they live with us every other week for 1 week at a time. I also have 1 dog, 2 cats and 1 part time dog (goes back and forth with the step kids) who like anything that accidentally finds its way onto the floor.
My favorite things to cook
I love baking! It satisifies my sweet tooth. Plus it's a great treat for everyone including friends, extended family, my husband's employees, neighbors and etc.
Since finding All Recipes, I've been trying many different things especially when I have something left over. For instance, instead of throwing away the bruised apples that my kids won't eat, I now make an out of this world dutch apple pie. Delicious!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I enjoy teaching the kids in the kitchen. I think it's important to "hand down" my knowledge in the kitchen. One of my girls has learned to duplicate my world famous chocolate chip cookies. And my oldest girl has already asked me to start putting together a book with all of my recipes so she can use them when she gets her own place. Gosh, I'm blushing!
I also think cooking is an excellent tool for learning math. After some digging on the internet and number crunching, my youngest son now knows how much it costs to bake a dozen chocolate chip cookies for a school bake sale. Pretty cool!!
My cooking triumphs
With 6 children ranging in age from 19 to 10, I feel like cooking a meal that everyone likes is a triumph in my home. Although their tastebuds are as a diverse as wildflowers along the highway, the whole family enjoys my steaks. I soak them in worcestershire sauce and sprinkle one side with garlic powder and the other with Jane's Crazy Mixed Up Salt. Regardless of the cut of meat, a steak grilled by my husband is always delicious because of my marinate. Wow, a cheap steak that doesn't taste cheap!
Another triumph in my house is brussel sprouts. Considering most kids don't like vegetables at all especially the green ones, it's uncanny how much my children enjoy my sprouts. I just steam them in the microwave until their squishy. After adding butter, Jane's Crazy Mixed Up Salt and Garlic Powder, I cook them another 5 minutes. When they're done, I top them off with shredded Kraft Shredded Parmesan, Romano & Asiago Cheeses. Yummy!
My cooking tragedies
I haven't had many cooking tragedies. However one time I failed miserably at my attempt to recreate a neighbor's white chocolate fudge. Although I'll never try to make it myselft again, it's okay because that's why people have particular specialties especially at Christmas.
