April 2006, my then boyfriend, now fiance’ and I, took a long drive out into the country. I had no idea where we were headed, but I figured it must be good … We passed farm after farm, before we finally pulled over next to a big beat up old Chevy. Matt couldn’t stop smiling, and I was now wondering what the heck could be so special about a junky car on a smelly farm (yes I’m an ex city girl).
The passenger door to the Chevy opened up, and out walked a teenage girl who I had never met in my life. "Who is that?" I asked. "Come on lets go say hi" Matt replied. I got out of the car, and watched as the girl walked around to the back of the Chevy. "Hi there you must be Matt" came a voice from inside the Chevy. "Why don’t you go say hello to the girl in the back sweetheart, I have some business to take care of" said Matt as he walked up to the drivers window.
I carefully made my way to the back of the Chevy, as it had recently rained, and I was in flip flops (yep AZ native). I now noticed that there were 2 kennels in the back of the truck, and immediately knew why we were here, and boy was I excited! The girl was fiddling with the front door to one of the kennels when I walked up. The kennel door swung open and out barreled the 2 cutest puppies I had ever seen. They immediately ran to the back of the truck where I was eagerly awaiting my surprise, and showered me in puppy kisses.
We took 2 sable male Pembroke Welsh Corgis home to our newly rented duplex that day, and I was the happiest girlfriend in the world. We named Rosco on the way home that day, and Ferguson went through 3 or 4 names before we finally decided on his a week later. Life was good and all was well.
Flash forward to February 2008, Valentines day. This time I was the one doing the driving, and Matt was passenger on his lunch break sick with the flu. Needless to say, we bickered all the way to the airport. His first thought was that I was taking him on vacation and he hadn’t been able to pack…..nope, not that lucky : ) We made our way to the "cargo pick up" area where neither of us had been before. "Is it records, a new TV, a car???" Did I mention he hates surprises? "No babe just be patient," I said.
Finally, a cargo cart drove across the cement field up to our point of view, and into the pick up terminal where we were anxiously awaiting our surprise. From out of the back, a tall man in a blue suit greeted us with a smelly dog kennel, "congratulations on the new puppies guys, I think one of them peed."
That day we took home 2 female tri color Pembroke Welsh Corgis. I named Cora on the way home, and Jasmine aka Jazzy didn’t get her name for a week or so later, just like Fergi.
We quickly found out how much WORK having 4 dogs really was. People always thought we were crazy every time they saw a parade of midget dogs walking 2 people down the street. But we didn’t care, we loved them, all of them, and they all loved each other. We were one big happy crazy dog family with many hours of training still ahead of us.........
