This is the Alpha and Omega of roll recipes. I've been making bread for a long time and have sampled a great many recipes but his one is far and away the best. I put it in my "Hall of Fame" recipe notebook. You can make it as a loaf if you don't want to make rolls.

I really like this recipe but am perplexed about why it rises beautifully until it is kneaded the final time. It looks rounded and perfect until then. I am using bread machine yeast that is new. The end result is a small, lumpy loaf. Not pretty. It tastes okay but it looks bad.
