Cookin up some pancakes al fresco' on our honeymoon.
About this Cook
I am 25 years old and have always loved cooking. I grew up watching & helping my Grandmother (MawMaw Tottie) cook traditional southern comfort foods like rice & gravy, gumbo, homeade sausage & boudin, and homeade yeast rolls. My mother also taught me to be adventurous and try new things. She regularly tried out recipes found in her Ladies Home Journal or swapped with other modern career gals at the office.
My favorite things to cook
I am famous for my from-scratch chocolate cake. I love to make breakfast for my husband at home & while camping. Our favorite is banana pancakes at home and campfire eggs when camping. I also found this wonderful camping recipe called bisquit on a stick-so fun to make over a campfire- its a culinary miracle!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love to collect & try out fancy appetizer recipes. The women in my family have a girls only Christmas party every year & I get to try a bunch out on them.
My cooking triumphs
My first memory of cooking is my mom teaching me how to make an egg over-easy. (I dont know exactly how old I was but I was just tall enough to see over the edge of the frying pan :) I was on a mission after that to make the perfect fried egg-not too runny-but still enough golden yoke to dip your toast triangles in. I am proud to say that today, I can make the perfect over-easy egg every time!
My cooking tragedies
For my 21st birthday, I decided to have a Mediterranean dinner party. After reading that it was a dish usually reserved for special occasions, I decided that I wanted to make Moussaka for the main dish. I went through hours of elaborate preparation, thinly slicing & layering the eggplant slices with salt in a colander, simmering the sauce forever, & painstakingly assembling the layers perfectly. IT TASTED HORRIBLE! To this day, I dont know where I went wrong but it was so salty and greasy. I simply could not serve it to my guests so at the last minute, I went and got a pork tenderloin & made a lovely mediterranean stuffing with figs, feta, etc. & it actually turned out quite nicely. So I guess this could be qualified a triumph as well :)

Pastry for Double Pie-Crust
This is a great base recipe. Super simple & works like a charm every time. So far, I've used it for chicken pot pie, mini meat pies & tonight I'm making apple pie. Its a little heavy but it doesn't get soggy easily, so thats good.

Chicken Pot Pie IX
This is a new favorite! My hubby said its the best chicken pot pie he's ever had & he is usually so hard to please w/ a new recipe. I didnt really measure my veggies-just used what I had on hand, but the sauce for the inside really makes it wonderful! Definitely going in the ole' recipe box to make again.
