Slow Cooker Guisado Verde

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2009
This is a tasty basic recipe, but I think it needs more to be an actual stew. I made it as directed, but afterwards wished I had thrown in some veggies or beans. We ate it as tacos with frijoles and cheese. I'll make it again, but will add more to serve as a stew.

Chuck's Favorite Mac and Cheese

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2009
I thought this was kind of terrible. It had a very sharp tang from the cheese, of course, but also from the sour cream. Also, it looked kind of gross because of the cottage cheese. Not a fan.

Apple Hermits

Very good basic recipe, and it allows you to do a lot of customizing. I grated 2 small apples instead of chopping them, so I didn't have big chunks or any weird texture. I added a handful of oatmeal to help with the extra moisture. Instead of the glaze, I added 1/2 cup of white chocolate chips. I probably won't do that next time; no need for extra sweetness.

Too Much Chocolate Cake

I made the recipe as is, and I thought the instant pudding texture was a little weird. My family, however, thought it was delicious. I frosted it with the "Special Buttercream Frosting" found here.

Yum Yum Yum. I used 1c butter and 1c shortening, and added an extra tsp of vanilla extract. This will definitely be my go-to white frosting.

Golden Rum Cake

Reviewed: May 6, 2009
This cake is rumtastic. Probably the first time I've preferred a cake the second day. I used about half the amount of glaze and thought it was sufficient. Make sure you let the glaze soak in. The first day all I tasted was rum, but the 2nd day you got the blend of rum with butter and other yummy cake flavors.

Very Good! I only made 1/3 the amount, added a big pinch of brown sugar, real lemon juice and some chopped chives.

Apple Cider Pancakes

Delicious! They taste like much fattier apple cider donuts! I used Bisquick and just swapped the cider for the milk. It might have been my imagination, but these seemed to cook more quickly than normal Bisquick pancakes.

Slow-Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 18, 2007
Easy and tasty! I added about 4 sliced carrots and 3 ribs of celery in addition to black beans. I wanted it thicker, so I only used 2 cups of chicken broth as liquid.

Good starting point. I used veggie broth for part of the water (about 1/3) and added some more herbs.

Very tasty. I used bacon bits instead of ham and Mrs. Dash instead of Creole seasoning. The recipe made three baseball sized balls.

Buffalo Chicken Dip

Reviewed: Oct. 29, 2005
The first time I made this, I put it all in the slow cooker as the recipe states, but it looked gross. So I changed it to a layered dip: cream cheese and hot sauce as first layer, chicken and dressing as second layer, and some shredded cheese on top (1/2 to 1 cup). Then I microwaved the whole thing for about 5 minutes. It looked a lot better and didn't separate.

Good! I used sausage instead of crab. Also, instead of 2 cups of butter, I only used 1/2 cup. and just mixed it into the stuffing, along with the red pepper flakes and pepper. I made the stuffing in advance to save time.

Very easy! I didn't have wine on hand, so I used chicken broth. It was well received. Don't leave it in past the 4 hours, though, or it will get tough.

Cajun Style Blackened Snapper

WHOOO! I love spicy food, but this was too much for me. I did like the background flavor, but it was overwhelmed by heat. We'll make it again, but cut the cayenne and pepper amounts.
