About this Cook
I'm 25 and when I'm not at work (boo) I like to cook and bake for myself and others. Born and raised in PGH, PA-Go Steelers and Pens!!! (As for the Pirates...tailgating is always fun and PNC park is awesome). My boyfriend and I have a big group of friends so I like to try out new recipes on them. I also have a partner in crime with my buddy Laura. As long as we've got beers, Y108, and some interesting recipes, we have no problem bunkering down for a day in the kitchen (esp. in the Winter)!
My favorite things to cook
Cookies, appetizers, dips, football/tailgating/party foods, meats, potatoes, breads, casseroles, veggies, seasonal/Holiday foods. Pretty much anything! I'm a big fan of perusing several different recipes and choosing ingredients/methods that I think will work well. The only problem I encounter is that I never measure and often end up throwing stuff together...so it can be hard to exactly recreate a recipe.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving with my dad's family. Having nine kids and over 30 grandkids, my Grammy can feed an army. Baking cookies with my mom and sister. Now my mom helps me out in the kitchen, it's a lot of fun!
My cooking triumphs
I can't think of one thing in particular. Most of what I make is pretty well received though. My dad will polish off just about anything I make; I like to think of him as a garbage disposal...which is great because I hate wasting food! I think this site has given me courage to make more things from scratch than I ever would have before. I never realized how easy (if a bit time consuming) it can be.
My cooking tragedies
Dropping stuff on the floor...hasn't happened in a while though, knock on wood. Not a tragedy, but the kitchen is a distaster zone when I'm through with it; I'm a terribly messy cook. I rarely go a week without a minor burn or sliced/grated finger, ouch!

French Baguettes
I made this last winter to go with Sheperd's Pie. The flavor of this was really nice. I was a little dissapointed that it didn't have a nice crunchy crust and textured, chewy interior. Next time I will let it slowly rise in the fridge for at least a day (my favorite local bread has a 72 hr rising time). I'll also put a bowl of ice cubes in the oven while it's baking. A baking stone might also help?? Great recipe, I just want to keep tweaking.

White Chocolate Gorp
I'm not a huge fan of this (not a white chocolate lover), but I found it strangely addicting! Others also couldn't stop eating it. I did (approx) equal parts rice chex, cheerios, pretzels, cashews, peanuts, and regular and peanut m&ms. I also added about a tsp of peanut oil to the melted chocolate. Even 1/2 the recipe made a ton!

White Cheese Chicken Lasagna
This was a nice twist on the same old lasagna. I simmered the chicken breasts in chicken broth (with added herbs and spices) then reduced a little bit to provide the 2 cups worth for the sauce. I also used 2 small bags of fresh spinach. I just sauteed until wilted with a couple cloves of garlic. I also added an egg, some italian seasoning and dash of salt and sugar to the riocotta mixture. Overall, very nice!
