About this Cook
I am a single female living amongst one of the U.S.'s top culinary regions, the San Francisco Bay Area. Pretty much the only limitation I have to food are the things I would see on Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods show. One of the greatest things about this area is the diversity of foods available. I would say that I have been "spoiled, culinarily speaking" since I've come out here from my hometown of Kalamazoo, MI. Besides cooking, I enjoy pretty much anything outdoors, including camping, canoeing/kayaking, skiing, bike riding, and hiking. I also like to play around with my Cricut machine and scrapbooking, as well as knitting and quilting. However, a typical is spent quietly at home with a book, my laptop or a good movie, all accompanied with a great homecooked meal and a glass of Michigan wine.
My favorite things to cook
EVERYTHING!!! I honestly don't have a favorite thing to cook, but I love to cook & bake, so I enjoy finding recipes of all levels (especially difficult ones), just to see how well I do. I have say that my favorite part of the cooking process is the taste testing!! :)
My favorite family cooking traditions
I am half Korean, and my mom used to make this soup for New Year's Day which became known as New Year's Soup. Since I've moved away, I have tried to make it myself, but there definitely isn't anything like Mom's!!! I also have to mention that her Christmas Eggrolls are superb too!
My cooking triumphs
I would have to say Christmas 2008, when I was asked to cook dinner for 5. I did have help, the main course was prime rib, which another member of the party of 5 cooked to a stupendous medium rare, but the rest was up to me. Cooking at other people's houses is a talent, especially when dealing with cooking essentials. Not only did I make the other 7 dishes, but I was also asked to dress the apartment to make it feel inviting. On top of cooking the dinner, I also made Christmas gifts of 5 different baked goods and tree ornaments. I stayed up all night to do so, and when dinner came and went, I was completely "spent!"
My cooking tragedies
One day, I thought that I would try to make myself an elegant meal and sit down to a movie, and decided to pick up some shark. Now, I am not a huge fan of "fishy" tasting seafood, nor had I ever had shark before. I found a recipe online that sounded just right for my specifications, and proceeded to cook it. I didn't have any experience at all with cooking shark, and I don't think I ever will. One bite into that steak, and it was "Adios!" I'm not really sure if it was the recipe, my cooking, or the shark, but it was completely disgusting!!!
