I have fallen in love again! With cooking and baking! After several years of looking at it mostly as a task (other than holidays, when I always enjoy pulling out all the stops and spending the day in the kitchen) I've rediscovered the joy of puttering around in the kitchen. Thanks to AR, I can easily find tasty, healthy recipes for the kind of dishes we enjoy. In addition to AR, I enjoy reading cookbooks and scanning recipe columns for new ideas. I plan a couple of weeks worth of menus and then do one big shopping trip for the staples and a few smaller trips in between for the perishables. That way I have everything on hand when I get home from work so I can get dinner on the table without having to run to the store for missing ingredients. I'm always looking for healthy foods and appreciate suggestions made by other cooks about ways to make recipes lower in fat or sodium.
My favorite things to cook
Soups, stews, baked goods, casseroles. I also like to make desserts, especially to take to potlucks or whatever---everyone appreciates home-baked goodies.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom was a great baker. We always had a homebaked cake or pie for dessert. I especially liked the stollen and cut-out butter cookies Mom made for Christmas when I was growing up.
My cooking triumphs
Making appetizers for my son's graduation open house. Cajun Appetizer Meatballs from AR were really a hit!
My cooking tragedies
Not really a cooking tragedy, but did involve the stove and a saucepan. I used to do a lot of crafting which sometimes involved tea-dying material. One day I put a pan of water with tea bags on the stove to boil and forgot about them until I smelled something burning. All the water had evaporated and the end result was I melted the saucepan to the stove's heating coil--very careless of me and I certainly learned my lesson and never leave the kitchen with a pot on the stove. I also guess its good that I don't do much crafting anymore.
