You Know You Are A Cooking Addict When…

Your spouse prints something off the internet and says “Wow!  THIS sounds like fun!”  It’s a new recipe for pork.

You are feeding your dog gourmet leftovers because even though the dish was fantastic, there’s that new recipe you are just dying to try.

It’s winter.  You have an outside laundry room.  You refer to it as the ‘big chiller’ because there isn’t enough room in the fridge.

It’s a beautiful day outside and instead you are Googling ‘vermicelli’, ‘polenta’ and ‘osso bucco’.

In the Recipe Exchange, someone asks a question and you have all the exhilaration of a 7-year old, hand raised high, going “I know, I know!!!”

It takes you longer (much longer) to clean up the kitchen than it does to prepare the meal.

It takes you longer (much longer) to make the meal than it does to eat the meal.

You cook FOR your dog/cat/goldfish.

You begin to take photos of everything you prepare.

You go to a restaurant, order a great dish, and then mentally dissect it before you eat it

You go to a great restaurant but can’t wait to go home to try something you’ve seen on their menu.

Your grasp of the French language is limited to Coq au Vin and Chicken Chasseur

Your grasp of the Spanish language is limited to Enchilada, Paella, Guacamole, Chorizo and Tamale.

Your grasp of the Italian language is limited to Risotto, Bolognese, Lasagne, Gnocchi and espresso.

Your grasp of the Chinese language is limited to Kung Pau, Dong Po, and .

You’ve just realized that you are fluent in food in four languages!

You plan your vacation around restaurants you’d like to visit.

You go on vacation and spend a lot of your time at the grocery store marvelling at all the great stuff they have that isn’t available at home.

You go on vacation but always stay in a rental house or place with a full kitchen so you can cook.

You go on vacation and you come home with really cool souvenirs:  ceramic knife, new vegetable peeler, fancy mandolin and a cookbook from the region.

You go on vacation and are so glad to be back home so you can cook in YOUR kitchen.

Your sense of humour seems to be largely limited to food    ;-]

(Honestly, ALL of the above is TRUE, except that I don’t have a goldfish…)

LOL! Weirdly, not much fits me, but I'm still an AR Exchange addict (although I'll never admit it). Great blog as always.

Aug. 14, 2009 9:53 pm
Hahaha! Great list! And this one: In the Recipe Exchange, someone asks a question and you have all the exhilaration of a 7-year old, hand raised high, going “I know, I know!!!” is SO me!!!

Aug. 14, 2009 9:55 pm
That was one that I could totally relate with!

Aug. 14, 2009 9:59 pm
...but you still cook for a goldfish? ~~~ Some of those things are true about me.... You Know You Are A Cooking Addict When… you're asked"what woukd you like for your birthday?" and you tell them you want a cooking gadget!

Aug. 14, 2009 10:03 pm
NZ, You are so SWEET!! And everything is true about me but I also don't have goldfish or take vacations. Your blog made me giggle and nod several times! It does seem like there needs to be some good news around here, like Gary's wife getting better, But this is OUR lives and this is who we are. We have rants and tears, joys of birth and anguish over sick cat's and dogs. Our kids drive us nuts and we NEED to shoot the hubbies sometimes!! JK Sorta! hahaha Thank you for injecting a little levity in our busy busy day! I hope this note finds you and yours healthy and happy! Patty

Aug. 14, 2009 10:08 pm
So cute and so true! My fiance and I were comparing cabins to rent for a weekend and the only reason we chose the one we did was because it had a full kitchen! :)

Aug. 14, 2009 10:17 pm
Thanks Patty! It is LIFE, the good with the bad. That's a large part of what I enjoy about this site -- people seem real, with real issues. We can discuss things here and get a whole myriad of ideas, suggestions, etc.

Aug. 14, 2009 10:18 pm
Thanks, CookinBug. Yup, we're going away for 3 nights in two weeks, and searched high and low for just the right kitchen... We like to eat a nice lunch out, go the the local market and stock up on food and wine, then go 'home' and cook and relax without having to worry about driving.

Aug. 14, 2009 10:46 pm
LOL Those are ALLLL me! So funny! I have a list of "dream eats" for just about every city in America. If I ever get to travel, I'll be so fat!! Also - you need to add "When people come to your town for the first time and ask what they need to see while they're there, you give them a list of restaurants"

Aug. 14, 2009 10:49 pm
LOL -- yes, a restaurant list, a grocery/market list and a kitchen gadget shop list.

Aug. 14, 2009 11:46 pm
Thanks for the laugh. That is a great list. I needed the giggles. :)

Aug. 15, 2009 3:40 am
Thanks for the giggle, goodeatNZ. Your blog was funny, and too true!

Aug. 15, 2009 4:05 am
About the only thing you didn't add was: I'm an addict because when someone describes a new (to me) recipe, I make a mental note that "here's another good one that I must try (or try to find a recipe for)"!

Aug. 15, 2009 4:21 am
That's so true! Great blog, Thanks!

Aug. 15, 2009 7:27 am
Loved your blog. They all pertain to me. Thanks for putting a smile on my face.

Wow, Do you know me? The only thing different is that I cook for 2 dogs and 2 parrots instead of goldfish. my dogs get specal soups and my parrots love spicy food. On vacation I love going to restaurants getting new ideas of recipes to master. My dream vacation would be a culinary cruise through Europe. Have fun cooking.....

Aug. 15, 2009 10:26 am
Yep, perfect NZ. That is all so true. Don't have the fish, don't have the dog, (but the neighbors do), but I have the cats! I took my daughter shopping last weekend for her first apartment and the most fun I had, (read that "I") was kitchen shopping at IKEA. You would have thought I was outfitting a kitchen for a 5 star restaurant, not a 50 sq ft. kitchen.

Aug. 15, 2009 11:05 am
Great blog. Your vacation comments are so true! You know you are a cooking addict when you buy a Strawberry Torte and brownies from "the best local bakery" and wonder how you could make them better! Thanks for the smiles.

Aug. 15, 2009 5:21 pm
The only place we diverge is on the kitchen while on vacation. I like to eat out and try the local cuisine. I laughed at your laundry/cooler...Mine is a terrace/freezer. Thank heaven I'm in the right hemisphere for Christmas to be a cold season holiday. Thanks for the laughs.

Aug. 15, 2009 11:26 pm
Thanks for all the great comments!!! I guess I'm not alone in my obsession :). Just finished googling shops/markets for the place we're going next week. Wondering if some of the stuff in my freezer could go in the luggage and still be chilled when we arrive, and am going to e-mail the house people to find out what spices, if any, they have on hand.

Aug. 16, 2009 12:38 pm
You got me. I'm an addict! I really enjoyed reading your blog!

Aug. 17, 2009 4:38 pm
So funny and so true !

Aug. 17, 2009 6:40 pm
OMG, this is SO me! All of my clothes are OLD (no big, if not in the kitchen, I am working in my nursery). You never see me at the mall and I have no clue what current fashions are. I LOVE grocery shopping! Will spend hours planning meals for the next week or 2. Go through the store ads, clip coupons, print recipes that go with what is on sale and I am a happy camper. And I know all of stores that have everything I need. Both of my sons have cooked with me since they were bout 8 years old. One thing my oldest wanted as a graduation present was a recipe box full of my great/favorite recipes. How cool is that?

Aug. 17, 2009 6:41 pm
This blog was funny and I could relate to almost all of them and never knew I was a cooking addict : ) Thanks for sharing some humorous reality!

Aug. 17, 2009 7:33 pm
I love the part about planning your vacation around food. Wouldn't it be fun to go cross country eating the regional foods. EXample Texas- chili, steak. St. Louis-ribs, Illinois-Chicago style hot dogs, etc. etc.

Aug. 17, 2009 7:38 pm
you know you're a cooking addict when... for your 19th birthday your parents offer you jewelry and instead you ask for knives, and your 20th birthday they offer you a family heirloom and instead you ask for pots and pans

Aug. 17, 2009 7:40 pm
Hey, whereabouts in NZ are you off to? We are off to Queenstown soon and all I can think about it Sombreros Mexican Cantina, mmmm that will be the highlight of the trip!

Aug. 17, 2009 9:17 pm
Thanks, everyone -- so glad you enjoyed it! Teriyaki and C Anthony -- isn't it great that young people are still interested in real food, not just stuff you stick in a microwave? And, I think cross-country dining would be one sport I would excel at! We're off to Waiheke Island Chicken -- food and wine, you know! Have you been to Alva Rados in Christchurch for Mexican?

I so enjoyed this blog, I was chuckling so hard that tears were rolling and My Huge German Shepard, Keanu came running, cocking his head,He must have thought I'd lost my mind. The only vacation my ex husband took us on, was from Missouri up to Mazzoula MT, and WY. we hit every chili fest along the way. What a blast!!!! My youngest was 6.5, and my oldest was 8. What a grand time. Course he had to ruin it and tell me it was for a job interview, and staying in the KOA camps was the cheapest. Well Not really ruined, it was alot of fun. My son learned that helping is a pleasure, met alot of really fantastic people along the way, that rattlesnake is fantastic in Chili, And a grown man can really pass out from too much chili. I think the trip was a sucess!!

Aug. 18, 2009 6:52 am
Very cute. Not much fits me either, we actually plan our vacations around food venues.

Aug. 18, 2009 7:08 am
LOL! I do reserve places to stay with kitchens so that I can cook! Also, i'm a foodtv addict. I watch it so much, my 18 month old son knows who Rachel Ray is!!!

Aug. 18, 2009 7:11 am
I can relate. I am definitely a foodie too.

Aug. 18, 2009 7:51 am
You know you're an addict when you never order anything at a restaurant that you could possibly cook at home. We take a long vacation in Key West (restaurant heaven) every year but I start to miss my kitchen and my cooking at about day 10. No cooking on vacation -- I'd have to bring my knives and pots - the condo kitchen are sorely lacking in things needed to really cook.

Aug. 18, 2009 8:03 am
True True, not much isnt me =) also, when your 9 year old goes on vacation to his grandparents and when asked what he wanted for dinner he says pizza and they say no take out he say "well cant you just make a grilled pizza?" =) at least he loves my cooking.

Aug. 18, 2009 9:13 am
Yep, most of these are me as well. *You know you're a cooking addict when you have a TV in the kitchen so you can watch Food Network while you cook.* :D

Aug. 18, 2009 11:10 am
rofl, that was awesome! thanks!

Aug. 18, 2009 1:12 pm
OH Oh OH!! I got one! When you're telling someone directions the directions include restarants and the like. IE: "Turn left at the McDonalds and continue until you see the East Side Marios."

Aug. 18, 2009 1:43 pm
UH-OH! Is there a 12 step program for this addiction? Not that I would go....

Aug. 18, 2009 1:55 pm
lol , great blog.. cowgirl the first step is culinary school.. lol!

Aug. 18, 2009 2:23 pm
love this- add to the list when you are telling your friends about a recipe and one of the ingredients is a turkey carcase to be used a broth for the soup -lol

Aug. 18, 2009 2:40 pm
This one: "You go on vacation and you come home with really cool souvenirs: ceramic knife, new vegetable peeler, fancy mandolin and a cookbook from the region" is SO me. :)

"You go on vacation and spend a lot of your time at the grocery store marvelling at all the great stuff they have that isn’t available at home." snickering because i do that...

Aug. 18, 2009 6:56 pm
I have not been to a restaurant in years when I did not attempt to disect the recipie. Yes my dog eats home made dog bisquits. That is why we are all here on this site.

Aug. 18, 2009 7:54 pm
Loved this! LOL on the girl that goes on vacation and ONLY stays in cabins that have full kitchens...that is totally me. I am also guilty of checking out groceries stores while on vacation...I went to New England last fall and had to ship a box home I bought so many different kinds of waffle mixes, syrups, jellies and on and on! ha!

Aug. 18, 2009 8:20 pm
So funny. I went to London and did exactly that. I really could've probably spent hours at the grocery store and was sad I couldn't bring much back home.

Aug. 18, 2009 8:50 pm
WOW!!! What a response! I've always either had a house with a TV in the kitchen, or re-arranged my furniture so a TV could be seen from the kitchen. No, 1gdcowgirl, I am in denial and DO NOT want a 12 step program. Kare, here in NZ they sell 'chicken frames' for stock making -- how happy was I when I first saw that ;]. Cooki Chu and Emmae, I always take old shoes on vacation, so I can throw them abway at the end of the trip and have extra room in my luggage for "souveneirs".

Aug. 18, 2009 9:02 pm
WildAngel -- Bessie says to tell Keanu thanks for lookiing after you so well and to make you some treats!!! ;]

Aug. 19, 2009 4:39 am
LOL!! This is too funny!! It fits me exactly and I've turned my boyfriend into a FOOD CRITIC too. And, I always ask for "cooking things" for birthdays, x-mas, valentine's, everything!!!

Aug. 19, 2009 5:06 am
This totally fits me. It takes me way longer to clean up than make the meal.

So many of these points fit me too. I went on a quilters' get-away weekend to Hyannis. When the other gals were fabric shopping, I hit the restaurant supply house. I spent more on a salad crisper, 8" round parchment paper, doll sized creamer and muffie pans than I did on fabric. Money well spent!

Aug. 19, 2009 10:21 am
LOL!!! I loved this! I am so there with you on this! My husband just e-mailed me a sourdough recipe...no subject line...just the recipe as my hint to get busy baking. Thank you for the laugh, great blog!

Aug. 19, 2009 10:34 am
Oh, my gosh. This is so me! My family gave me the hardest time, 'cause I cooked for them for my birthday. Thanks so much this. I'm going to email it to my family so they'll understand, it's not just me! :-)

I'm not sure we should ever have sympathy for anyone who can't enjoy cooking, or eating, a great meal...just because they have to help clean up.

Aug. 19, 2009 11:17 am
What a great read!! When we travel, I always take old undies and leave a pair every night to make room for souvenirs; have to remember to do that w/ shoes! Every we go east to Amish county, we have to stock up on jellies, breads, etc. Are we all sick or what?

Aug. 19, 2009 11:27 am
That is SO me. One additional one: when I'm in the grocery store someone always asks me how to cook something. I try not to go into an hour long lecture all about the ingredient and the different ways to cook it.

Aug. 19, 2009 12:22 pm
I love the list. Don't have any pets though :( Do have other types of ginepigs though :) A hubby and his co-workers and 2 toddlers that will eat almost anything :) I love cooking and i have a small collection of recipes that are the fam fav. Though hoping to make the collection bigger soon :) only been cooking for the last 2 years so don't have a huge collection yet :( Love getting kitchen stuff and cookbooks for bday/xmas/anniversery lol

Aug. 19, 2009 2:24 pm
spent a week in tuscany and what souvenirs did i bring home???? FOOD!!!!! pasta, olive oil, wine, salami.....

Aug. 19, 2009 4:34 pm
Love the blog! Too true. And when my adult children are gathered together from around the country and enjoying a meal, what do we discuss? "What did you eat on that vacation" and/or "What will we have for our next meal".

Aug. 19, 2009 6:39 pm
This is great! Although I haven't cooked that much in almost sixty years of living, I've been doing so more frequently lately and thoroughly enjoying it--amazingly, so much of this actually applies to me already!

Aug. 19, 2009 7:02 pm
So nice to know I'm not alone. I felt like I was reading about me! You forgot to add "Your husband can't use TIVO because it is "full" of recorded cooking shows."

Haha! My husband thought I was the only one that went to grocery stores whenever we go on vacation. You always learn more about the area by scanning the grocery shelves!

yep, I do all except I don't have a goldfish either. I ask for cooking stuff for every bd, holiday, etc. I know a few more food words in those languages, plus some in German, Dutch, Russian, you know. LOVE to cook. Thanks for making my morning fun.

I have the goldfish...but....just fish food for them! Fun read! Thank you!

AHhh, so true! After keeping 100# off for 5 years I've realized I prefer COOKING to eating! (yup, still love to eat, but enjoy watching others try my experiments.) On vacation we tend to eat twice a day: once in the room/apt and then a lovely, local place. This goes whether we are spending the weekend at Lake Tahoe, Merida Mexico, or a 5-star hotel in Asia or Europe. Love to eat locally: pick up items at farmers' markets for one meal a day. The other we tend to choose a place recommended by locals: they find us amazing jewels. It's the easiest way for me to transform from a tourist to a traveler and learn the culture. Of course, though hubby would be just as happy with a steak and baked potato 365 days a year we have fun.

Aug. 20, 2009 3:54 pm
I don't always Love the cooking, but I love the eating part, so it has to be done. Getting always better results w/the help of AR has gotten me more inspired to be up to the daily task of getting dinner on the table-No DH's have ever cooked so it's all been on my shoulders. I've gotten many food related gifts over the years-my favorites are actual FOOD gifts, so let's all keep on cookin'!

About Me
As a Californian, now living in New Zealand with 20 odd years spent in the Caribbean in between, my cooking style has had a lot of different influences. After several years in other businesses, we finally came to NZ 7 years ago, and with no experience other than eating in a lot of them, we opened a cafe! Our firends thought we were nuts, and in retrospect, we were. But, even though it is HARD work, we love it. It always amazes me how few people know how to cook, or enjoy doing it. There is tremendous pleasure in preparing something, even something simple, and having it brighten up someone else's day.
My favorite things to cook
Right now, I am on a Pork Belly kick -- thrice cooked (par-boiled, browned, braised) 'Dong-Po' is the best. I have also been enjoying doing a whole, oven roasted local Salmon with herb mayo lately for dinner parties. I also love to play with Asian inspired marinades - getting the blance of sweet, salty, sour and hot just right.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother loved Mexican food, and definately past the taste on to me. I always loved my m,om's enchiladas and tacos, and often whip up something like that quick for dinner. When I have more time, I make home-made Tamales. It's time consuming, but worth it. We have a hard time getting decent whole roasting turkeys here in NZ, but there is nothing like spending a day preparing 'the works' for a holiday dinner.
My cooking triumphs
I recently catered for a group of 18 - 22 for 18 days straight. I had prep support ffrom the cafe (they were able to make all the cookies, muffins, cakes, etc) but I single-handedly managed all the main dishes, plus the orgization and ordering supplies. The group was so impressed they gave me a gift certificate and I had a real Sally Field's moment: They like me! They really like me!
My cooking tragedies
Serving things at dinner parties, not realizing that they weren't things that everyone liked or had tasted before. I was shocked when an important client turned up for the lovely roast lamb and said he had never eaten lamb before! Corned Beef was another one.
