I am a graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology (now known as Carnegie-Mellon University) in Home Economics Vocational Education(now named Family & Consumer Science) I am a retired teacher and enjoy entertaining. My daughters have become good cooks also with a little guidance from me and their grandmothers. My husband of 48 years loves my cooking and encourages me to try new recipes often. Our joke is: If he likes it, I never make it again. Not true, but if it was a difficult recipe and very time consuming sometimes it can be a long time before a repeat appears. His mother was an excellent cook and while I was working for Equitable Gas Company as a Home Economist in Pittsburgh , we published some of her special recipes such as Mushroom Casserole. I loved my job with the Gas Company; however, when I married that was the end of my job. Helping a young man to tweak his grandmother's Apple Pie recipe. Working with him to prepare for the Allegheny County Fair Cook-off as far as timing so he would complete the recipe in the allotted time. He won the cook-off. The prize included some cash which helped him to continue his ecucation at the University of Pittsburgh. According to my husband, I can't make Apple Pie as good as my mother-in-law. I finally gave up after many trials. The only time he gets Apple Pie is to buy one. We have a family friend who makes him one for his birthday each year. Guess what? He never complains to her if it doesn't taste as good as MOM's. I guess he learned a lesson???
