My favorite family cooking traditions
I love cooking a huge Thanksgiving meal for my family and friends. Our menu is outrageous! The quantity of food is mind-boggling. Over the years I've found or developed a lot of good make-ahead recipes to make the pre-meal crunch less overwhelming, and I believe that our family Thanksgivings are memorable for all who partake.
I also love to bake an elaborate old-fashioned gingerbread house every Christmas season. My kids have always really looked forward to this particular tradition. I even teach a class to friends and neighbors in the baking and construction of their own gingerbread houses every year, as my gift.
My cooking tragedies
My worst tragedy occurred when I was a preschool teacher. I invited a personal friend who happened to be a dentist to visit my students to talk about oral hygiene. Later, as a thank-you, I made him one of my "famous" homemade cheesecakes. Now, as a preschool teacher, I made lots of homemade playdoh, which requires a great deal of salt, which I bought in bulk. Well, my salt container was clearly way too similar to my sugar container in appearance, and that cheesecake for my dentist friend? I'll bet you can guess by now what my worst cooking disaster was!
