Like many people here I rate this one only four stars as it really does have to be tweaked to be more than basic. That said, on its own it's a terrific option for low-budget meals that go far--I filled my seven quart crock-pot before leaving for work and came home to a beautiful, thick stew that hadn't reduced a whole lot in volume. I did not brown the meat before putting it in (I don't have much time in the mornings before work); I did add more paprika, more black pepper, more garlic, and much more salt than called-for; as well I added some basil and some white wine. The meat is perfectly cooked, melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the vegetables are tasty and cooked but not mushy. As has been noted in previous reviews, even on low this stew needs only about 8-9 hours in the crock pot. Yum!
