Peanut Butter Marshmallow Squares

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2009
These are really sweet but there's a time and place for something really sweet. When I make these again I'll use a square pan rather than a 9 x13 pan so that they'll be thicker. That's the only suggestion that I have. Like others, I omitted the nuts and coconut but that's a personal preference thing. Probably would be good wtih the nuts and coconut too but I'm not big on coconut. These square are great for sweet indulgene at Christmas time.

Apple Rhubarb Crumble

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2009
When the comment at the table is, "this is good enough for company" the recipe is way up there in the ratings. I like a topping with oatmeal so added oats but aside from that I followed the recipe. Served warm with a little good quality French vanilla ice cream... Yum! Lots of good comments around the table about this recipe.

Salmon with Lemon and Dill

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2009
Easy, delicious, quick. Can't ask for better than that. Followed some suggestions made by other reviewers; a little less lemon and a little less dill. Lots of compliments and a recipe I'll use again. This review is amazing considering I've always said that I don't like salmon. I do now!

Potato Leek Soup I

Reviewed: Nov. 1, 2009
Easy and tasty. I didn't weigh the potatoes and likely used more like 2-3 lbs. so the proportion of leeks to potatoes was slightly different than in the recipe. Very yummy. No need for salt and pepper. Was very flavourful as it was.

Pat's Baked Beans

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2009
Superb flavour. Didn't have the variety of beans the recipe required but that didn't matter. This recipe would work well for any combination. Makes lots. Won't even think about looking for another recipe for baked beans. Don't think I could improve on it.

Baked Macaroni and Cheese I

Reviewed: Oct. 10, 2009
When the family says "make that any time" it's a 5 star recipe. I used very old cheddar (7 years old) and topped it with some bread crumbs mixed with some parmesan. The bacon, garlic and onion added lots of flavour too. Easy and tasty.

German Apple Cake I

Reviewed: Oct. 5, 2009
Wow! So basic but so good. Very tasty yet inexpensive. I made a half recipe and only change I made was to double the cinnamon. Personal preference. I always double cinnamon. Also, cut the apple into small pieces. End result was lots of praise and not much left. The crunchie top was lost on the second day but still good. I will try reducing sugar next time but recipe as is was amazing. If you can't take compliments, pass up on this one.

Sweet-Sour Red Cabbage

Followed the exact recipe and took to a potluck. Not even a teaspoonful was left. Froze some and saved for later. Was just as good as fresh and got rave reviews. Can't ask for better than that.

Bacon Wrapped Water Chestnuts II

This is so easy and so tasty. I used 1/3 strip of bacon for each. Aside from that did everything per the recipe. Highly recommend. Easy and tasty. What more could you ask for?

Smothered Bacon Chicken

Reviewed: Sep. 25, 2009
We had this dish for dinner tonight. At the end of a day at work this was a breeze to put together. Once it was in the oven I could relax. I made some slight changes based on reviews: cooked bacon first, cut into small pieces and mixed with the soup mixture. Sauteed a few mushrooms and topped the dish with them towards the end of the cooking time. I decreased the sour cream by half. Made some of these changes for ease and to cut back on fat. Went over well and was very easy. Might be a good dish with meatballs made with ground chicken or turkey. Will make this one again.

Grandma's Apple Dumplings

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2009
Definitely a 5 star recipe. Had raves about these dumplings and they were so easy to make. I made the recipe as is and found it a bit sweet. That's simple to fix. I had extra apple pieces so I just added them around the dumplings. That was a plus. Took the advice of another reviewer and covered the dish for the last half of the cooking time. A recipe that is so easy and receives such great compliments is definitely a keeper. Thanks for sharing it.

Cream Cheese Squares

Reviewed: Sep. 4, 2009
Since I didn't stick to the recipe exactly I have to give it a 4. I used only one package of cream cheese and decreased the sugar to 1/3 cup. Added a splash (probably 2 tsp.) lemon juice. Topped the cream cheese with some raspberry jam that had been heated in the microwave to make it easy to spread. Brushed the top with butter so that cut back on the butter. Then sprinkled with sugar. These were a huge hit. Took them to work and they disappeared faster than anything I've shared with my co-workers in the past. There were lots of questions about how to make them. This recipe is very versatile. Have fun with it! Don't make it unless you can handle lots of compliments. Rated as a 4 only because I made changes.

Dash's Donair

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2009
No doubt in my mind. This is a five star recipe. And it's so easy. Used to live in Halifax so have had some great donairs. This one is right up there with the ones from Halifax. Wouldn't change a thing except to triple the amount in order to have some to freeze for a second meal. Huge thanks for this recipe. Round two of this review - made these a second time but multiplied the recipe times 5 so have some made ahead. One of the comments was "This is a home run!" Didn't change a thing other than making a larger batch.

Tortilla Beef Bake

This was easy, tasty but too salty for my taste. Definitely a 5 star recipe if the salt can be reduced. I think it was the chips that made it so salty.

Awesome Baked Sea Scallops

Reviewed: Jul. 14, 2009
I'll make this dish again. Very easy and tasty. Since I made a change, I rated it as a 4 star recipe. I used one large clove of garlic. That was just enough to complement the scallops. Five cloves would have been way too much. I used crushed cracker crumbs since I didn't have any bread crumbs. They are crunchier than bread crumbs and were the perfect topping. This is an easy meal to make at the end of a work day. So simple and tasty.

Nonalco Punch

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2009
This is so easy and so good. I left out the sugar completely and it was perfect. The gingerale and pineapple juice are sweet enough. Served this at our Canada Day celebration today and there were lots of complements and everyone had seconds. I made an ice ring with straight cranberry juice to keep it cool. Be sure to add the almond extract. It melds the other flavours together. This is a keeper.

Strawberry Angel Food Dessert

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2009
This recipe is a keeper. I amended it because I like to cut back on the sweetness. I used only half the sugar and I made my own glaze using the Strawberry Glazed Pie recipe on this site. I left the sugar out of the glaze completely because it was already sweet enough from the jello powder. This was a great dessert for our neighbourhood Canada Day celebration. Looked great and people came back for seconds. I made this the day before and I think this helped the bottom two layers blend together well. Yum!
