I was born in San Diego, but moved to Alaska in 1958. Back then, fresh ingredients were difficult to come by. My father was a food adventurer, so there was a bit more than the velveeta, iceberg lettuce, canned soup enhanced casserole and jello salad available at home.
My favorite things to cook
I'd like to become a better baker. I've never mastered pie crust! I enjoy cooking new dishes, and would like to find Ethiopian recipes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My father blazed the trail for us with his tacos. It was haute cuisine during the 1960's in Anchorage. We became his prep team, and then settled down for this 'exotic' treat after skiing.
My cooking triumphs
I make an incredible rhubarb crisp.
My cooking tragedies
The first time I fried chicken (1968) I successfully browned the pieces, but didn't realize that I had to continue cooking the chicken. I served this good looking chicken full of pride. One bite was all it took to reveal the disaster.
