Red Velvet Cake III

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2009
I made this recipe for a Christmas dessert, and it worked pretty well. The cake, itself, was pretty tasty. It was quite moist once it was baked. I did have issues with the batter being extremely thick, which meant that it didn't get mixed as well as it should have. I ended up with several white spots throughout my cake. My family thought it was purposeful, but it would have been better if the dough wasn't as thick.

Cream Cheese Frosting II

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2009
A really nice recipe that was extremely easy to make. I used this to top a red velvet cake. I only used 1 1/2 C of confectioners sugar because the frosting was getting really sweet. I think at the 1 C mark, the frosting would be the perfect flavor for topping cinnamon rolls.

Favorite Old Fashioned Gingerbread

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2009
Great recipe overall. I took some of the suggestions other reviewers suggested-- honey and brown sugar instead of molasses, 1/2 C of applesauce, and doubling cinnamon and ginger-- and they worked very well. I topped our cake with whipped cream, which made it a huge hit. This cake, obviously, has a heavy spice taste to it, so it's a little bit of an acquired taste, but my family seemed to like it well.

Buckeyes II

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2009
This recipe is a lot like my grandmother's recipe that I was trying to replicate. Instead of crushed graham crackers, I used rice krispies, which is what I recall my grandmother using in her recipe. These were a huge hit and didn't last long. This recipe doesn't make a large amount, so I plan on doubling it again for next year.

The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2009
Excellent recipe overall. I took the suggestion of another reviewer and added a dash of cinnamon to the dough. Other than that, I made them as written, and they were terrific. I didn't get as many cookies as the recipe says, but I'm not sure that I rolled the dough out as thinly as I could have, so that probably accounts for the lower number of cookies. I would definitely recommend this recipe to others-- even beginners like me!

Simple Hamburger Stroganoff

Reviewed: Dec. 15, 2009
This was a simple, crowd-pleasing meal for my family of picky eaters. I didn't alter the recipe much. I simply added an extra package of gravy mix to give the hamburger mixture a tad more flavor.

Oatmeal Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Sep. 2, 2007
A nice oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe. I added more vanilla than called for and used creamy peanut butter, as that was what I had on hand. I will make these again.

Poke Cake III

Reviewed: Jul. 4, 2005
I've made this recipe a few times and have always had rave reviews. To make things a bit healthier, I use light pie filling, sugar free gelatin, and fat free whipped topping. I have changed a few things-- more pie filling and a bit more whipped topping. Overall, though, a super recipe.

Salsa Chicken and Potato Packets

Reviewed: Nov. 22, 2004
I made these tonight for supper and found them easy to make. Instead of using a whole breast, I diced the chicken up. I also added some shredded cheese. My husband really likes these and thought it was quite tasty. I, on the other hand, didn't like them as well. Anyone wanting to try these in the future should note that it took me longer than an hour to get the potato pieces soft.

Blonde Brownies III

Reviewed: Feb. 13, 2003
My boyfriend made these for me instead of a cake for my birthday and we both liked them a lot. We used a 9x13 pan and I believe that a 15x11 would have been a bit better. We had to bake these for 30 minutes to get the center done but the rest of the brownie got a wee bit hard. The flavor was excellent though. We added a little vanilla to the dough.

Apple Crisp II

Reviewed: Jan. 31, 2003
I thought this recipe was pretty good although several people commented that there was "too much cinnamon" in the apple mixture. Serving it with vanilla ice cream or whipped topping helped cut the cloying taste of the cinnamon. I also added more oatmeal than listed because the topping seemed really cake-like.

Reese's® Chewy Chocolate Cookie

Reviewed: Jan. 29, 2003
This cookie has been a Christmas staple at our house for years. I've never had a problem actually making the cookies but I do run into a problem finding the peanut butter chips at certain times of the year. Try these cookies today. You won't be disappointed!

Oatmeal Peanut Butter Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 24, 2003
I almost gave this recipe 3 stars (it would have been my first) because I was disappointed in how flat and thin my cookies turned out. I did enjoy the taste, however, and suspect that the flatness may be due to something I did. Does anyone have any ideas?

Baked French Fries I

Reviewed: Jan. 24, 2003
These fries were very good and pretty quick to make. I tripled the recipe (big eater at my house)and cut the potatoes fairly thin. I did not have to cook for 45 minutes as the recipe listed but for 30 minutes. Also, a good way to coat the potatoes evenly is to throw them into a freezer bag, add oil and seasoning, and shake the bag.

Anniversary Chicken I

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2003
This was a great change from the usual "naked" chicken we have at our house. I did change the type of cheese used as we only had provolone and a "pizza" cheese blend around. Despite the change, the recipe won rave reviews from my boyfriend. I, personally, thought it was a bit salty and will try a reduced sodium tereyaki sauce in the future. To cut the fat slightly, we used fat free ranch dressing.

Snickerdoodle Cake II

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2003
I doubled this recipe to fill a 9x13 pan and needed to bake it about 10 minutes more than the listed baking time. As far as coffee cakes go, this is pretty good. It's definitely better than some of the others I've made off this site. I added cinnamon and vanilla to the batter. Though there isn't much that makes this taste like a snickerdoodle, I think this is perfect for breakfast or a tea. The batter would also be a great base for banana cake or apple cake. Thanks for the recipe!

False Cabbage Rolls

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2003
I was looking for a recipe similar to my mom's cabbage rolls but without all of the work. This is a very good recipe. Instead of the tomato soup, I used tomato sauce (3 cans) and a can of tomato paste. I added 4 cloves of garlic, parsley, red pepper flakes, and a bit of Italian seasoning to give the sauce some pep. A good way to reduce the fat is to halve the meat and substitute brown rice instead. I will be making this again!

Taco Cornbread Pizza

Reviewed: Jan. 14, 2003
This was an interesting twist on the traditional taco dinner. My boyfriend said, "This is good. It might be better with regular pizza crust though." I personally like the cornbread crust and think smearing a very light layer of refried beans on the crust before topping it with meat would be a great addition. I also think this would be a great party food-- I might even make it for a Super Bowl Party!

Caramel Peanut Fudge

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2002
This is a great recipe! I loved how much these tasted like real Snickers candy. I used caramel topping for ice cream as one reviewer suggested. I strongly advise against using it. It made things quite messy and sticky. Next time, I'll use a thicker caramel-- perhaps the carmel used to make caramel apples. Otherwise, I'll be making this a Christmas staple.

Cinnamon Bread I

Reviewed: Dec. 20, 2002
I made this recipes for a potluck at my boyfriend's work. It went over really well and I was surprised by the tasty nature of the bread. Instead of buttermilk (which I couldn't find and probably wouldn't have used anyway), I used 1 cup of apple cinnamon flavored yogurt. It added great flavor. I also added a few tablespoons of milk to make the dough more pliable. Next time, I will make double the topping and be sure to add it to the middle of the bread.
