Berdean's Cube Steak

Reviewed: Nov. 18, 2011
Very good, however like many other cooks, I added chopped onion, garlic and mushrooms to the "sauce" ... I also added red wine (cheap burgundy) for part of the water ... Lastly, I stirred in a bit of Kitchen Bouquet" to darken the slightly pinkish (from wine) sauce

Fry Sauce

Reviewed: May 12, 2011
My Niece, who owns a couple of restaurants uses "Fry Sauce" with fresh snipped or dried Dill Weed mixed in, on her Reuben Sandwiches, in place of "regular" 1000 Island Dressing ... Myself, I sieve a hard boiled egg and a splash of lemon juice mixed with the "Dill Fry Sauce" and use for a shrimp cocktail sauce ... It's pretty tasty as a bread spread for plain old cheese sandwiches also ...

Coconut Syrup

Reviewed: Feb. 23, 2011
This is so much better than the so called Coconut Syrup one gets in Hawaii ... You can actually taste the coconut !... I used an immersion "stick" blender before cooking the Coconut Milk, Coconut and Sugar, and the coconut is barely perceptible ... I changed the recipe by using plain White Sugar instead of Brown Sugar to keep the syrup white, as opposed to having the final product, tan ... A bit more appealing to me and mine ... Sooooooooooo GOOD ...

Orange Sherbet Salad

Reviewed: Apr. 8, 2010
I've been making this 'salad' for years ... Though I drain the Mandarin Oranges and save the liquid, adding this liquid to make the 2 cups of water ... Also, try using Vanilla Ice cream in place of the Orange Sherbet ... The end result is very much like a Half & Half Creamsicle ...

Ground Beef Mexican Style

Reviewed: Sep. 5, 2004
Reading over other cooks reviews, I added the Taco Seasoning while the ground beast was browning. I can't imagine how bland it would have been without that addition. In fact I also added 1 TBS of McCormicks 1 Step Beef (Tex Mex Chili) to give it even more pizzazz ... In my opinion the extra spice(s) only added to the finished product. We love SPICY! The chopped tomatoes on top, gave the dish the needed color, texture and flavor to this wonderful "Mexican Strogonoff". Wish I had made more now, I only made 1/2 recipe ... Thanks Kris for submitting the recipe. For sure a keeper in my recipe book. ******

Homemade Noodles

Reviewed: Aug. 21, 2004
Every couple of months a group of OLD friends get together for a "retro dinner" ... This time dinner was at my house, and Homemade Chicken and Noodles was on the menu along with Cornbread ... Having never made noodles before I was a bit afraid they would turn out like the ones my Grandmother used to make, which were like "anemic rubber bands" ... All I can say, is WOW!!! I WILL NEVER purchase egg noodles in the grocery store again. Craig, you posted the recipe in memory of Elizabeth, I made the noodles this morning with my 96 year old Grandmother's Rolling Pin. Perhaps both of the ladies were with me, while I was making these delicious noodles. Thanks again for submitting the recipe. I cooked for 8 and just quadrupled the recipe, must say I did have to add a couple of extra eggs to get the correct(or what I thought) consistency to roll out ... I wish my Grandmother "had her mind" so she could enjoy the outcome. I doubt she'd be impressed, as her food is pureed these days.

Grilled Chicken Pasta Salad

Reviewed: Aug. 18, 2004
The first time I prepared this recipe it turned out very dry. I used a bit of garlic powder along with the Lemon Pepper Seasoning Blend to add a bit more flavorto the chicken, but other than the garlic powder, the reciped was followed as posted. The second time I made this recipe, I used Marinated Artichoke Hearts and mixed the marinade with the juice of 1/2 lemon, then poured a portion over the Grilled Chicken, Pasta and Lemon Pepper Seasoning Blend. The added liquid or dressing made all the difference in the world ... The results were much better, in my book, than the orginal posted recipe.

Applesauce Custard Pie

Reviewed: Aug. 18, 2004
Too bad the star rating only goes to 5, because this one deserves many more!!! Thanks for submitting this DELICIOUS recipe, Cathy. After reading other reviews, I decided to omit a portion of the sugar also, I found 2/3 cup was sufficient and the pie was still plenty sweet. Next time this gem is prepared, I will add some raisins. I did use a mix of cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon in the "batter", which floated to the top as the pie cooked ... Perfect in every way, and "so tasty too" ...

Confetti Pies

Reviewed: Aug. 11, 2004
Granted the recipe is very easy to prepare, however the cleanup is a total "B" !!! When and if you make this BE SURE to use a very deep bowl, a mixing bowl just doesn't cut it when the pineapple tidbits hit the beaters in the liquid ... I literally have sweetened condensed milk and lemon juice interspursed with Mandarin Orange and Pineapple all over the kitchen ... You know, it does look like confetti on my kitchen curtains and walls !!! After the initial shock of having it fling all over, I called my Mom to come over and hold a LARGE flour sack dish towel while I continued to use the mixer to beat, beat, beat, this time in the laundry tubs ... I do hope all the mess was worth it, the pies are in the fridge chilling and hopefully setting up as I type. All I needed was a: "Lucy, I'm Home", because this fiasco was just like something Lucy and Ethyl would get into ... I'm sure this deserves a 5 star rating, but with the mess I was faced with, lucky to get a 2! Remember DEEP BOWL ...and maybe crushed pineapple After my initial review I came back to "revise" the posting, the pies never did set up .. A total waste of ingriedents and Tide to wash the kitchen curtains.

Babe Ruth Bars

Reviewed: Jun. 15, 2004
Granted these gems are delicious, at least what I scraped out of the pan, the remainder are cooling before they are cut. I agree, they are more like Watchmacallits than Baby Ruth's. I must admit, I felt like Lucy minus Ethyl at the Candy Factory while preparing this recipe! I needed another set of hands, as the concoction sets up VERY QUICKLY when the cereal is added. Not thinking when the spatula was not working to mix everything I "dove in" with my hands. Can you say HOT LAVA????? Even though I had a bit of trouble making these, they still get 5 stars. BTW, burn ointment works as good as buttered hands when pressing into the pan to cool.

Try using a Devils Food Cake Mix, adding 1 cup of Chocolate Chips, 1/2 cup chopped Macadamia Nuts and 1/2 cup Flaked Coconut. Nearly a week after making the cookies, the few that are left are still moist and chewy. Awsome recipe with so many variations, Thanks for posting ...

Easiest Applesauce Cake

What a GEM of a recipe ...Thanks eagles1955 Beware this makes 2 loaf pans NOT 3 as stated. Made a few minor changes, added 1/4 tsp ground cloves and 1/3 each chopped pecans and raisins, the loaves came out perfect in evey way, very moist and tasty ... If you like this recipe try Country Banana Bread from this site. It uses a yellow cake mix as a base also
