About this Cook
I'm a PhD student in English at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
My favorite things to cook
Indian, Italian, Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern dishes are my forte, and I also like to experiment with chili. I personally think I make the best guacamole and pizza in the world (thanks to the Exquisite Pizza Sauce recipe on this site). Recently I have been trying to incorporate more tofu into my diet, and I love cooking that because it is so quick and cheap. I am a pretty terrible baker, though (see below).
My favorite family cooking traditions
Mexican Easter! We cast aside the traditional ham in favor of enchiladas, guacamole, and lots of margaritas! Yum. I also like our traditional New Year's Eve appetizer party.
My cooking triumphs
When I made Basil Parmesan Spread (also off this site) and my family cringed at the thought of pesto, sundried tomatoes, and feta, but ended up loving the dish. I am slowly converting them to gourmets!
My cooking tragedies
When I tried to make scones and accidentally added 3 tablespoons of baking powder instead of 3 teaspoons. They were the worst food I have ever tasted in my life, bar none.

The Best Vegetarian Chili in the World
I think this makes a lot more than 8 servings. I made (and will in the future make) the following changes, but it's a really flexible recipe - it is chili, after all!: Use a whole onion. Nix celery and bay leaves. Use chipotle peppers instead of jalapenos. Nix green chili peppers. Add chipotle chili pepper, cayenne pepper, cumin, and hot chili flakes. Only really need 1 package of burger crumbles, 2 cans of beans. Use frozen corn instead of canned (tastes fresher). Use 1 28oz container of crushed tomatoes and 1 can of tomato sauce instead of whole tomatoes.

Tortellini Soup I
My husband accidentally bought dried pesto tortellini, and it turned out just as good. (Might be a cost-cutter.)

Iced Pumpkin Cookies
Darn, the secret's out! I've made a recipe just like this one before and everyone is always incredibly impressed. They're like tasty little cakes!
