About this Cook
Now, back in Austin, I have a new outdoor living space with the coolest grill/smoker/rotisserie and am going crazy, smoking everything I can, from chickens, to turkeys, to brisket.
My favorite things to cook
Tamales. They take a lot of work, but I use quality ingredients (no lard, no yucky meat parts) and people love them.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Holiday cookies. Love making containers to give away.
My cooking triumphs
Cakes for my friends special occasions.
My cooking tragedies
Slow cooker stuff! We were in an extended stay for a while and I had to figure out how to make dinner with no oven, so I decided to try my hand at slow cooking. Had some disasters at first (overcooked chickens are nasty in a slow cooker), had some pleasant surprises along the way (leek & potato soup!), but now, I'm finally comfortable cooking most anything in a slow cooker. Live and learn! LOL

Chick and Ox's Pig Pickin' Sauce
I just had to post a positive rating for this sauce because the previous reviewer cooked it, and I think they were expecting this to be a traditional red sauce. You don't cook this one. It's called a sauce, but it's more like juice. Being raised in eastern NC, this "sauce" is used on pig smoked outdoors. It's great on a lot of things, but you'll have to understand what this is to appreciate it. It's more like a spicy seasoned vinegar - traditionally used at pig pickins (google it if you aren't sure what a pig pickin is)

Tasty Buns
Oh my gosh, these came out so wonderful and talk about EASY! I had so much flour left over from my Christmas baking, so when it came time to make hamburgers, I thought I'd try my hand at fresh buns. This recipe was perfect. I was in a hurry and didn't let them rise as much as I could have, but they still came out wonderfully.

Apple Pie Filling
Yum-E! I made this last night with the extra granny smiths I had from the tree out back. I added an extra 1/2 cup of sugar since the apples were so tart and used only 5 cups of water. I did use 1 tblsp of cinnamon, but I still don't think that was quite enough (I'll be adding more when I use it in a pie). I also added 1/4 c of unsalted butter to give it a little richness. I only wish the recipe included a bake time for a pie using this filling.
