Red Lentil Curry
This was my first ever lentil dish! It worked out well, altho' I added mushrooms for variety. I used a can of chopped tomatoes rather than 'tomato puree' - not sure if this is an American term for chopped tomatoes, but you can't get a 14oz can of puree...? Forget rice - serve with chapatis dry heated in a frying pan for 30 secs on each side, and perhaps with some cucumber and yoghurt raita.

Fabulously Sweet Pear Cake
I tried making half the recipe in a loaf tin - it was done in around 50 minutes. A wonderful and unusual loaf - I love the way the sugars form a toffee sauce with the pecans over the pear before adding to the flour. The pecan flavour was great - but my pears weren't "dripping" ripe, so the pear taste was a bit lost. Will definitely make again many times and try to get riper pairs!

Tofu a la Bourguignonne
I tried this recipe for my first vegetarian dinner for vegetarian friends, and it went down really well. I added mushrooms to give a bit more variety, and therefore needed a bit more wine / water to make it a bit more 'saucy'. I still found it was only enough for about 3 people, so add more tofu or other vegetables for 4 people. The 'bourgignon' taste was great and worked really well as the wine soaks into the tofu... yum!
