About this Cook
I am a self-taught individual who has spent time in the kitchen since I was a little kid. My mom was never afraid to hand me a knife, or a mixer, or a hot pot so I got to do things early. I spend time in Japan each year and have an absolute love for Japanese cooking, but rarely attempt it at home. I enjoy simple, well done meals made with fresh ingredients. I stay away from ingredients that are perceived as “bad for you” and use only a little butter or cooking oil. I firmly believe that there is an easy to achieve balance between indulgent and healthy.
My favorite things to cook
Simple but flavorful dishes that are balanced. I hate the idea of a "side-dish", rather each meal contains equal parts of proteins and vegetables (unless of course it is a meatless dish).
My favorite family cooking traditions
I was raised Eastern Europan, spent time with Latin American, travel annually to Asia, and enjoy French insipired modern cuisine.
My cooking triumphs
In college I've always had people over for dinner. I was broke but always managed to pull off meals that drew attention. When I was better off I offered to cook for one of the dorms a Sunday morning breakfest. Everyone expected some eggs and pancakes, instead I had a 12 dish menu planned out and all ingredients prepared. Dishes ranged from cinnamon swirl french toast to veggie stir-fry. Cooked everthing from scratch, made to order, with one person to help me. Had dozens of people eating within an hour - never once did I work in a kitchen. I am still proud.
My cooking tragedies
There were plenty in the past and many more to come.
