Our family has sponsored children from Belarus since 1996, for respite from the radiation. It's a way of helping children, that my kids can learn from first hand..such an excellent opportunity for the Belarussians, and ourselves. I love to cook, and I love to experiment with foods from different cultures. I love to host "pot lucks" with family and friends, and casual dining is the key around here.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook with chicken and/or fish. We try to eat together at least 5 nights a week as a family, and I make sure there is always a salad, and at least 2 veggies to go along with what I've made. I look at cooking for my family as my number one job, although I am employed full time outside of the home, I make time to make sure my family eats healthy to stay healthy.
My cooking tragedies
The biggest goof I ever made was making Easter dinner one year. It was nice and mild outside all week, so I decided to cook the turkey on the barbeque. Well, first of all, the weather turned, and it was freezing outside, so the barbeque had to be kept on high in order to keep it hot enough. Then, because we'd gotten an extra large bird, I didn't have a pot it would fit in, so we bought those tin foil pans. We bought two, and put one inside the other, thinking it would make them stronger for carrying the bird back and forth. Unfortunately, it also caused a vaccum, so with the high temps, the bird was gorgeous and brown on the outside, and when we cut into it at the table........Raw and pink on the inside. Needless to say, my family have never let me forget, and now beg me NOT to barbeque any more turkeys!
