About this Cook
For me, food is more than just fuel, it's an experience. The act of preparing food thru cooking & baking is as nurturing and necessary as the act of eating. I need to cook, not just to eat, but to live. But I don't enjoy overly complicated recipes or meals. Simple recipes, quality ingredients, and variety - that's how I like to cook.
My favorite things to cook
First and foremost - Soup!!! I love to make soup, from the stock up! Secondly, anything that requires me to use my beautiful blue, 7 quart Le Creuset dutch oven. Somehow everything prepared in that pot tastes better.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Some of my most treasured memories are of my Ukranian grandmother and great-grandmother's meals. Borscht, perogies, pyryshky... No other foods evoke such tender memories.
My cooking triumphs
I am a self-proclaim Soup Queen. Hopefully I am worthy of sitting on my grandmother's throne (that sounds funny!) I also have a knack with marinades - I have given away many marinade recipes over the years.
My cooking tragedies
Since moving to Calgary, Alberta, I have had limited success with doughs and pastries. I have found pie pastry to be difficult to work with and have had zero success in getting pizza dough to rise - yet both of these things I used to just whip up when I lived in Winnipeg. Hmmm...

Lentil Soup
This recipe is so easy and sooo delicious! As per suggestions from other reviewers, I used chicken broth instead of water, doubled the garlic and used balsamic vinegar rather than plain white vinegar. Also, I used an entire bunch of spinach rather than just a 1/2 cup. Wow! I am going to make this over and over again!!

Slow Cooker Pumpkin Soup
Did not like this recipe very much. I may have added too much of the herbs/spices, I didn't measure too carefully. But nevertheless, I found this soup too sweet and ended up discarding most of it. Not my cup of tea I guess.

Grilled Salmon with Habanero-Lime Butter
This was spectacular!! Rave reviews. Had to make a couple of adjustments because didn't have certain ingredients - used 1/2cup fresh lemon juice and 1Tbsp brown sugar instead of orange juice, used 1/4tsp dried habanero flakes in the marinade & 1/4tsp same in butter. Served with lime crema (1/2cup plain yoghurt, zest of one lime, juice of 1/2 lime) and coconut rice. Amazing!!!!
