About this Cook
Disabled 55 yr old divorcee hoping to move back to NY in 2010. My family is in Germany & I hope to visit them soon - health permitting. Not sure if I can fly for 10 hours but I want to see my 80 yr old dad at least one more time. I also have a 4 yr old granddaughter who loves my cooking - what a joy.
My favorite things to cook
German cakes, holiday cookies, cream puffs, goulash, soups, simple salads (cucumbers with a sour cream sauce - yum). I make great skinless fried chicken, mahvelous mashed (riced) potatoes & beets.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I'm a first generation German immigrant - I came to the US with my mother in 1962. I love German cooking & baking & watching family & friends eat. As with many intermediate cooks I'm usually too tired to eat much :) after spending hours cooking. I love to watch people eat good food.
My cooking triumphs
#1 - Frankfurter Kranz! This was part of a formal dinner I made from scratch in a 6'x6' military housing kitchen. I made everything from scratch - from the bread to the Frankfurter Kranz. The cake took 6 hours to make but I did it & it was fabulous! #2 - I also make a mean beef stew. #3 - Cinnamon rolls -- takes several hours from start to finish & they're gone in 30 minutes! #4 - NY cheesecake with strawberries - also yum!
My cooking tragedies
My first Thanksgiving turkey! OY! Crispy on the outside, raw on the inside. The second tragedy was ordering in a Thanksgiving dinner - a horrible gelatinous mess. Nowadays I make a great T-day dinner with a brined turkey. Whew, glad those Thanksgiving dinners are a distant memory ;).
