About this Cook
I am the oldest child of 4 children so I had to start learning to cook at the age of 8. By the time I was in high school, my mother would tell me the dinner menu and turn it over to me.
My favorite things to cook
I have a recipe that came from a Bisquick cookbook, for Thanksgiving leftovers that I love to make. The casserole is made from diced leftover turkey, leftover vegetables, cream of mushroom soup, etc. The topping is pinwheel biscuits, made from a batch of Bisquick, rolled out, smeared with leftover jellied cranberry sauce, rolled up like a jelly roll, and sliced across like sweet rolls. Then the whole thing is baked. The kids love it and it uses up some of the leftovers! I also take the turkey carcass with some meat still on it and simmer overnight in the slow cooker to make turkey rice soup.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Leg of lamb for dinner on Sunday and real shepherd's pie on Monday nights made from the leftover lamb. Cornbread sage stuffing with turkey at Thanksgiving, with sweet potato casserole covered with marshmellows, and of course, giblet gravy with rice.
My cooking tragedies
When I was about 12, my mother told me to go put on the rice to cook. I put a pot of water on the stove and when the water started boiling, I added the entire 2 lb package of rice, instead of only a cup. I had seen my mother add an entire box of macaroni and assumed that's how it worked. My mother never let me forget it!!
