I'm giving it four stars because it wasn't as flaky as when lard is used. Overall, good recipe, especially if you have butter-flavored shortening on hand.

Pretty good. I didn't have all the ingredients for my favorite whole wheat banana pecan waffles, and this was a fair substitute. Instead of plain ol' nutmeg, however, I used apple pie spice for a little kick. However, this recipe only made two waffles in my Waring Pro deep pocket Belgian waffle maker.
