My favorite things to cook
I love to cook everything. But my specialties are Soul, Cajun, Mediterranean and Caribbean/Latin.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I grew up cooking at Nana's knee. My family has been self-catering grand scale family events for longer than I've been alive--and we're always looking for a reason to eat/celebrate/eat some more. I can remember Nana, my mommy, and aunts baking and decorating a 7-tier wedding cake in our kitchen.
My cooking triumphs
I briefly owned a little restaurant in 2005. Although inexperience and the economy eventually got the best of us, we created QUITE a buzz while it lasted. It was the coolest feeling to see our guests raving over and devouring recipes that I, myself, had created--and even cooler to see them become regulars. When I visit my old neighborhood in Houston, I still occasionally get stopped on the street by people wanting us to hurry and reopen. I tell them "Maybe someday." (Maybe not :) But I will always treasure that experience.
My cooking tragedies
When I was twelve, I tried to make apple turnovers from scratch without using a recipe or really having any idea as to how they were made. Cut up apples, wrapped in clumpy balls of dough, and baked at 200F for a really long time. No one ate it. Not even the baby. My cousins still talk about it.
