About this Cook
Living the dream in PDX
My favorite things to cook
Soup in the winter.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom always made Ox-tail stew around the holidays. My dad stuffs a mean turkey and makes a Hollandaise sauce that is to die for... literally, watch your arteries.
My cooking triumphs
One time I made Beef Wellington for New Year's Eve with the help of my mom and my girlfriend. Our stove broke halfway through the preparation and we had to transport everything to a friend's house to finish cooking it. It turned out awesome!!! But this one 'alternate' sauce we made smelled like burnt plastic and chemicals... not sure what happened there.
My cooking tragedies
Once I tried to deep-fry some falafel but the oil wasn't hot enough and it all turned to oily mush. I'm currently learning the subtleties of yeast bread. If anyone knows some good yeast wisdom please pass it along. (By telepathy of course, because this site does not allow users to send each other messages for some odd reason)

Baked Beef Stew
Just like mom used to make, but with less nagging and worrisome banter.

Sweet and Spicy Soup with Black-Eyed Peas and Sweet Potato
This soup was freakin' awesome! I used part of a cinnamon stick and about 1 1/2 fresh hot peppers (it was a little spicy). I refrained from taking a pinch of every spice in my cabinet as another reviewer suggested. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because the recipe seems a little off with all those pinches. Maybe I'm a jerk but oh well! Stick to the spices that make the soup sweet and spicy and you've got yourself a five star soup indeed.

Russian Mushroom and Potato Soup
Butter. Its what's for dinner. But seriously, this type of soup is supposed to be very rich and I think this is a pretty good recipe. However this: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Hungarian-Mushroom-Soup/ I think is a much better one and adds subtle flavors such as lemon (for tangyness), soy sauce, and paprika.
