Been a busy month and Halloween is just around the corner. YAY!!! As I've said before, I carved my first pumpkin way too early. Excluding what is in my compost pile, this picture is the only remain of my creation. Its not much but I did carve it and did some wicked shading. Kids took the gooeys out but got bored so I got stuck de-gooey it.

After a week of not having phone, internet, and Allrecipes, I found out I really could cook without AR. *Hides from the stone throwers*

UPSIDE-DOWN PEACH FRENCH TOAST AFTER COOKING
Notice the creamy gooeyness between the layers. I really did cook it enough but it had a to die for cream cheese filling. So good. I should have used more peaches.

After spending some time sitting around and waiting for my daughter's dance classes to finish, I decided that I would teach myself to crochet and then knit. After my week of AR deprivation, here is my first crocheted scarf for my daughter Josceline.

Very nice job! and yes you have the front and back correctly identified. You are a whirlwind and make me feel like a complete slacker. Nice to have you back.

I have always wanted to learn how to knit/crochet, however, by the time I had the desire, the women in my family who were experts at it had all passed away.. Can you tell me what resources (books/references) you used to teach yourself? Thanks!

BSM: Its boredom and the cold weather that drives me. :)

Carrie Anne: I bought Boye's "I Taught Myself Crochet" kit from Wal-Mart. I haven't started the knitting kit, also from Boye and has the practically the same name. You can look online for videos about the different stitches in the book.

Barbara K: LOL. And a small blanket for Josceline's soon to be cradle for her baby doll. My MIL tried to crochet but it didn't work out for her. She says she has boxes of yarn sitting in her house so I figured I should use them up.

Nice job Josephine, as usual. The knitting and crocheting will get so much faster as you get more sure of yourself. After awhile it becomes a mindless, soothing, relaxing project. I always work on something during the winter months. How lucky for you that you have a source of yarn to be used up. This may sound very old fashioned, but your girls are really lucky to have you as their mom. It's really nice that you are showing them that these crafts (sewing, crafting, crotcheting, canning)of a bygone era are really valuable skills to have. Just look at how envious everyone here is of your talents.

Avon: That is too kind. I've heard so many stories that people read, watch tv, talk, and crochet or knit all at the same time. I'm in awe to hear these stories and hope I could be that talented. As for the "bygone era" nobody in my family does these types of things. My mother and step-father always worked and never really took the time with my sisters, brother, and I. So the ideal mother to me is what I see in the old movies, hear about (my MIL), and would want a mother to be. I just hope that other mommies, especially my age, see these OT blogs and say to themselves, "Hey. She can do it. I can too!"

Correction: My sister used to crochet but I don't think she does anymore.

Looks great! I love to crochet, but I can't knit...it seems there is an actual "knitting muscle" that we don't use for anything else, and I was crippled for 3 days after my first attempt. I had no idea how athletic you had to be to knit! ...and that was a cool lookin' scary punkin!

Would you be willing to share your recipe????

Nice job on the afghan stitch. Crocheting is very relaxing. So many different stitches. Some day I'll tackle learning to knit. Carving pumpkins is fun minus the gooey part! My hubby usually was the one to carve. He finally did one on a craft pumpkin so it could be used year after year. No gooey messes, either. Take care,
