Southern Style Thanksgiving Green Beans

Reviewed: Nov. 5, 2009
This was a great base recipe. I used beef broth instead of water and bacon instead of a ham hock. I also am not a huge vinegar fan, so I only used about a tablespoon total. It turned out really amazing with these changes! I cooked these beans in the crockpot for about six hours on low.

Old Bay® Shrimp Fest

Reviewed: Oct. 27, 2009
This tasted like nothing, really. I have no idea why the reviews are so good. All of the food was cooked perfectly, and I did take the advice of adding the potatoes with the corn. However, it just tasted like I had boiled everything in a pot of water. It smelled great, but I really didn't get any spice coming through. I will not make this again.

Jay's Signature Pizza Crust

Reviewed: Sep. 12, 2009
This was good dough. I rated it 4 instead of 5 because I am still looking for "it," the perfect crust. The only thing I did different was using a cup of white whole wheat in place of some of the AP flour because I ran out of AP. I used the Exquisite Pizza Sauce recipe on this site to go with it, and it was perfect. This recipe makes 4 personal pan-style pizzas perfectly.

Very Chocolate Ice Cream

Reviewed: Sep. 11, 2009
This was absolutely amazing! Please, please make this. I am an ice cream freak, and it was the best ice cream I have ever eaten. I used half and half instead of whole milk because that's what I had. For the chocolate, I used Nestle's baking cocoa powder and Ghiradelli milk chocolate chips. I also love mint ice creams, so I added 3 drops (it is very strong, so don't do more than that!) of peppermint OIL. All I can say is wow, wow, wow! You cannot get this at a store. For the second batch, I added crushed Oreos, and it tasted EXACTLY like a DQ Girl Scout cookie Thin Mint Blizzard.

Blueberry Sauce

Reviewed: Sep. 4, 2009
This was pretty good. I used blackberries instead of blueberries and vanilla instead of almond extract because that's all I had. I tasted just like blackberry cobbler filling. I will probably make it again.

To Die For Blueberry Muffins

Reviewed: Aug. 12, 2009
These muffins were good. I didn't make the topping to cut down on some calories. I added cinnamon and vanilla to the batter, and I think it really made the muffins great! I rolled my blueberries in some flour before putting them in the dough to keep them from sinking to the bottom. If your blueberries are on the tart side, you can roll them in sugar first and then just a tiny bit of flour to lock the sugar in around them. I will be making these again! This recipe made exactly 6 jumbo muffins for me. Also, I had one right out of the oven and it was okay, but after sitting overnight, they were MUCH better! Make these the night before if you have time.

Best Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie

Reviewed: Jul. 2, 2009
Best cookies I have EVER made!! I always add about 1 to 2 T more flour and do 1 teaspoon of baking soda instead of 1/2 teaspoon. I have never had flat cookies when doing this! Also, I didn't melt the butter, but everything else I did exactly as instructed. Try these!!

Exquisite Pizza Sauce

Reviewed: May 24, 2009
This sauce is what I have been looking for in a homemade sauce!! It is cheap and fast to make and very good. I didn't have any parm or anchovy paste, so I omitted those. Next time, I might do a little less honey because it was definitely sweet, but I like it like that. This is my go to sauce. I let it sit in the fridge for a few hours while I made the dough and the flavors were great.

Double Chocolate Mint Cookies

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2009
Delicious! The people who had runny batter possibly were using margarine because I did not have that problem at all. Also, my cookies were not flat at all. I followed the recipe exactly scaled down to 24, which is enough for a ton of cookies! This dough freezes great, so I think next time I'll make the whole thing. TIP: If you're looking for the peppermint extract at the store, do not get the mint! It has to say peppermint specifically. I've not made this three times, and I've discovered the secret to keeping them from getting flat is to add about 1 or 2 tablespoons more flour. Keep in mind that I only made 24 cookies, so you made need to add even more flour. The batter will look fairly dry, but does not taste like it when the cookies are baked!

Garlic Chicken Fragrant Rice On a Budget

Reviewed: Feb. 18, 2009
I wasn't expecting this to be that good, but it was easy. It really surprised me. It was SO good. I used basmati rice because that's all I had. I also added a splash of soy sauce and used chicken broth instead of water and bullion cubes. It tasted like fried rice! I have tried and tried to make fried rice, and it never comes out right. This is the way to do it. Next time I'm going to add some veggies and more soy to make it even more like fried rice. Save a LOT of fat by cutting out the olive oil completely. It is absolutely not necessary.

Sugar Cookie Icing

Reviewed: Feb. 12, 2009
YUM!!! Warning: This icing makes cookies even more addictive than they originally were. Very easy to make. I did need more milk than called for. I don't know how long it would take the icing to harden because they were gone before they got a chance!

Rib Eye Steaks with a Soy and Ginger Marinade

Reviewed: Jan. 27, 2009
This was a great marinade. I forgot the ginger and never have beer, and it still turned out perfect. I used some olive oil instead of sesame oil. I didn't poke holes in the steak or cut it to check for doneness because I didn't want to lose any of that great juiciness. I will definitely try this on fish and chicken too.

World's Best Lasagna

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2009
This was really good. I made it for a birthday party, and it was a hit! I think the lasagna weighed about 20 pounds, so it fed a LOT of people. The sauce was REALLY great and would be perfect on spaghetti or chicken. DO NOT leave out the fennel seeds. They were expensive, but I think they really made the sauce. I couldn't find any bulk italian sausage, so I bought Johnsonville italian sweet sausages with basil and cut off the casings, then browned that and broke it up with my spoon. Definitely drain the fat off after you brown the meat mixture.

It's Chili by George!!

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2009
Delicious! I used crushed tomatoes instead of tomato juice because my store was out. Also, I used black beans instead of the other kinds and added some fresh cilantro. This would also be good with a chuck roast cut into small cubes instead of the ground beef. The spice was perfect.

Quinoa Side Dish

Reviewed: Dec. 31, 2008
Very easy and healthy! I used chicken stock and cooked the quinoa in my rice cooker with the onions and garlic. You could really taste and smell the thyme as soon as it was added to the quinoa, so be sure to use fresh.

Chicken Tortilla Soup V

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2008
Delicious! I used lime juice instead of lemon juice, added a can of drained and rinsed black beans and some cilantro. I just used shredded up rotisserie chicken. I also am trying to eat healthier, so I omitted the tortillas all together. Really, really good still! This took almost no time at all and is very healthy!

Big Al's K.C. Bar-B-Q Sauce

Reviewed: Sep. 24, 2008
I liked the sauce, but it was very, very sweet. It goes well with more bland, low-fat meat like chicken or pork. I think it's too sweet for beef. Also, I thought the red wine vinegar gave it kind of a weird tang. That might just be personal preference. I think next time I'll use apple cider vinegar and a little bit less sugar.
