About this Cook
I am an artist, and enjoy building dollhouses, making dolls, sewing Baltimore Album quilts, and studying gemology.
My favorite things to cook
Desserts, especially cakes and pastries. Also breads. Love Scandinavian baking.
My favorite family cooking traditions
German: Stollen, wine kraut with juniper berries, bacon potatoes, pork roast. Swedish: pea soup with pork, pancakes with lingonberries and sour cream, sugar cake.
My cooking triumphs
I made a very passable dinner of Steak Diane and Potatoes Anna at the age of eleven. I love a challenge and enjoy "difficult" things like French and Swiss buttercreams, genoise cake, souffles, etc.
My cooking tragedies
I prepared hand-made chocolates in elegant packages for Christmas one year only to have a horrifying bloom appear on them before they were ready for giving. Mortifying, and I had only myself to blame for not yet understanding chocolate tempering.

Quick and Easy Cherry Bars
I made this Christmas Eve as a last-minute extra for the dessert table. I used three egg yolks I had left over from another recipe as a replacement for one egg, and had to add a little milk to compensate for Arizona dryness. (The flour dries out horribly here). I think it's going to taste good, what with a cup of butter, vanilla, and lots of eggs. A can of pie filling was PLENTY. It took about an hour to cook. I think it should be re-named, as it is a cake. I love that this is a no-chocolate, non-cheesecake cherry idea. I may try reducing the sugar next time. Thanks for the recipe!

Icelandic Christmas Cake
This is my favorite raisin cake. Easy to bake but also delightful to eat with that terrific Scandinavian flavor of cardamom. A great addition to a collection of Scandinavian baking recipes!

Kate Smith Coffee Cake
This cake is lacking in flavor, and dry as sawdust. I tried this as an alternative to bran muffins, but I wish I hadn't. Yikes!
