Columbus Day: My chance to be a stay at home wife/mom

Tomorrow is one of those rare holidays where the courts close (I'm a criminal defense lawyer), but the schools are open. My husband is also working, so I get to pretend I'm a stay at home mom. Being a wife and mother is my first job, but sometimes it feels like it comes in second. More than I'd like, actually. It's hard to work in such a competitive field and then put in the energy my wife/mom job requires. So I love days like Columbus Day, where I can putter around the house all day, baking and making recipes that I ordinarily wouldn't have time to cook on a Monday night. I will be home to welcome the children when they get home from school, hopefully with some warm cookies. When my husband gets home, he'll find me relaxed, opening a bottle of wine and with dinner ready, as opposed to frazzled and frantically trying to complete homework and home cooking.
I'll make Chicken Gruyere with Sauteed Mushrooms and some Swedish Oatmeal Lace cookies (both from all recipes). But more importantly, I hope I'll create a home atmosphere that everyone will be happy to come home to at the end of a fall day. Because no matter how much I love arguing in a courtroom, the thing I love more than anything is making a happy home for my family.
On a daily basis, it's a struggle to manage both of my jobs, as all too many people know from their own experience. So I'm grateful for days like Columbus Day, where I can focus all of my attention on the home front.
