About this Cook
My favorite things to cook
My favorite is baking- but I am not a big fan of sweets and I live alone so unfortunately I don't get to do it as often as I'd like because there is no one to eat it! Hopefully once I have a family...
My favorite family cooking traditions
I come from a German-American family so most of our traditions revolve around traditional German food. Kuchen, knephla soup, strudle, dumplings etc. I remember helping my mother kneed the dough until it was just perfect and then spreading it across the kitchen table until it was paper thin. So time consuming, but so much fun. The smell of German sausage and onions will forever remind me of those days.
My cooking triumphs
I make an outstanding rhubarb crisp... one of the few things I have mastered better than my mother. And my enchiladas are to die for- courtesy of a lesson from one of my Mexican friends.
My cooking tragedies
My most recent cooking tragedy was banana bread of all things... the culprit was some outdated shortening.

Strawberry Refrigerator Cake
This cake is the best for summer barbecues. So refreshing and light! I've made it with vanilla, cheesecake, and white chocolate pudding mix and all are very good. Will try it with just plain cool whip next time. Easier and I think would be just as good. I recommend using frozen sweetened strawberries or adding sugar to regular frozen strawberries. I also always use white cake mix rather than the strawberry. Very good and requested often!

Cuban Ropa Vieja
This was good but I was left disappointed. Living in Miami we get used to the very best. I found there to be too much tomato and not enough salt. Definitely needs to be marinated overnight for more flavor. The search continues for the holy grail of ropa vieja recipes.

Delicious Ham and Potato Soup
This recipe was fantastic! My family is German so potato soup was somewhat of a staple growing up. However my mom wasn't a fan of creamy potato soup and I am; so I was on the hunt for the perfect recipe. This by far is it! I used bacon instead of ham because that's what I had on hand and omitted the celery because we're not fans of it. Super easy and super delicious! Thanks for such a wonderful recipe!
