About this Cook
I come from a Euro-Asian background. My mother cooked many types of food, and I learned from her how to make things by taste. She makes the best spaghetti sauce for not being Italian, and her tacos are better than the Mexican resturants in town. Most people think I am a very good cook, I credit my mother for this, for she taught me all I know.
My favorite things to cook
My favorite things to cook have changed over the years. I love cooking all types of food. Now however I am learning to make Syrian dishes from my husband and his sister.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every New Years eve, we would make omochi-Japanese rice cakes. My mom has this neat machine that takes the rice, cooks it, and then kneads it into a ball. We take the hot mixutre and make rice balls, or spread it onto a flat pan. Our hands would get so so hot, but my sisters and I had great fun doing this. I miss those times now, hopefully we will have them again.
My cooking triumphs
When I can cook as well or better than my mom.. that would be a triumph for me. I doubt I would make it.
My cooking tragedies
I learned that I cannot bake pies. One Thanksgiving I decided to make a Boston Creme & a Lemon Merigine pie. Well, to look at them they looked beautiful, to cut them was a wreck. Instead of setting both filling were like liquid. I never baked a pie since, I buy them from the frozen section or the store bakery now.

Lebanese Chicken and Potatoes
I love this dish. Although I cut my potatoes into thick (about 3/4" thick) and then fry them until a little dark golden brown. While I am frying the potatoes, I boil the chicken in water. After the potatoes are all fried. I place them on the bottom of the baking dish, place the chicken on top. I add the lemon juice, garlic, olive oil and some broth from the chicken to the dish. Along with the salt & pepper, I do add the 7 spice to it and then broil for about 5 minutes. It's so yummy!!

Mahallebi
This is a great dessert, although my husband likes to also eat it for breakfast too. I add about 1/4 tsp of rose water and 1/4 tsp of orange blossom water, adds a nice smell to the dish. Instead of the syrup, I sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top.

Japanese Okonomiyaki
I haven't made this recipe yet, but it brought back memories of when my mom used to make it. She added sliced squid, bean sprouts, and konnyaku (yam cake-cut into small cubes). Then just before eating them we would put bonito (dried fish flakes), the green dried seaweed and tonkatsu sauce on top. MMM!! I think I will make this soon!!!
