About this Cook
I rarely follow recipes, except when baking. Better said, I rarely use recipes except when baking. I can never truly recreate things because of that, but it is more fun to cook with your pallette and instinct than a recipe anyway. Allrecipes is a great place to browse and look for good flavor combos or techniques. I am a mixed media/found object artist (www.cstankart.com). My art and cooking are similar because I rarely can recreate anything I do artistically because I go off instinct. The difference is I know the desired outcome of a meal before I start, but never a painting. My fiance and I are vegetarians (except when it comes to me and sushi), and I get grossed out at the thought of cooking meat. I love Top Chef and would love to go to vegetarian culinary school!
My favorite things to cook
Quorn chicken cutlets - the best chicken alternative out there! My muffined bananas have changed the way people view muffins.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Italian at Christmas - the one time a year I get homemade pasta. Helping my dad at Thanksgiving as a little girl - I loved doing the sweet potatoes. And toche (ta-chee) - eggs benedict with no meat is the meal that now falls under the name toche, but to toche is to take "goo why bread" and scrape the pot of hollondaise clean. My sister and her fiance adopted it to be their official sunday morning breakfast, and i just make it when i can. but naturally we get it when we visit my parents.
My cooking triumphs
Christmas dinner my best friend and I made for our friends last year.
My cooking tragedies
Burnt rice. Burnt onions. Burnt plantains. Ruined pots and pans.

Toscana Soup
I had leftover kale and found this recipe as an amazing way to use it! Being veggie, I used veggie italian sausage sliced. I made the first batch with potatoes and cannelli beans, and the second with just the beans. You do need the potatoes in there - that starch is vital.

Just be careful and remember things brown quickly if using a toaster oven!!! A little overcoooked on top, but oh so good.

Spanish Rice II
didn't have any green pepper, so i added a couple diced pickled jalapenos. gave it quite a kick, but was sooo good with refried black beans and spinach enchiladas. i didn't add quite as much oil as called for, because i really hate the taste of oily rice, and a little pinch of cumin. a definate keeper!
