About this Cook
I LOVE to cook and I love the joy it brings others. I am trying to teach my 3 year old how to "cook" and boy, does it take patience! I am a "wing-it" kind of chef, using whatever ingredients I happen to have on hand, so it's fun to meet up with so many other cooks that "wing-it" too!
My favorite things to cook
Bread (all kinds!) and anything that involves getting my hands into dough!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Christmas tree cookies from a 100 year-old recipe handed down from my grandmother. I have pictures of ME as a toddler trying to decorate these cookies in my high-chair. Now, I am getting the same pictures of MY little ones in their high-chairs attempting to decorate the Christmas trees!
My cooking triumphs
Homemade bread became a BIG hit in my home the first time I cooked it in 8th grade. I had many failures after that first success (I think I kept killing my yeast!) but I have learned much from each failure. Now I can whip up bread without much fuss (thanks to my heavy-duty KitchenAid).
My cooking tragedies
Shortly after I got married I made hamburgers from some ground beef. I didn't realize that they would shrink when they cooked, and I was trying to s-t-r-e-t-c-h our budget. We had my family over for dinner and the burgers cooked up to 2 1/2 inch circles! A lot of bun, not a lot of burger.

Aunt Teen's Creamy Chocolate Fudge
I've always struggled to make decent fudge. This was perfect -- so easy to make, with a wonderful creamy texture. My family and extended family really enjoyed it at Christmas time. Awesome recipe.

Grandma's Gingersnap Cookies
Great flavor, but mine turned out flat after using butter instead of shortening. Next time I'll try the shortening as written. I read that gingersnaps help with morning sickness, so I am eating my fair share!

Canned Apple Pie Filling
I made two batches of this today -- 14 quarts. Wide mouth jars made it much easier. I used 8 1/2 cups of water like many suggested and found that I had about 1 to 1.5 cups of leftover syrup which was a relief!!! PACK THE APPLES TIGHTLY into the jars, otherwise you end up with half a jar of floating apples and half a jar of syrup. Cram em' in! I left out the nutmeg as I'm not a big fan of it in my apple pie. Also left out the food coloring. Really fun recipe to make, and you really feel like you've accomplished something when you're done! I gave it 5 stars for the simplicity of the recipe and steps. Will make a pie this winter and evaluate taste then!
