About this Cook
Who got me started with baking? My grandmother who passed away when I was 11. One of my favourite cooking things is trading recipes by mail with a friend of mine from university. Our unspoken rule is that we do not share any recipe we have not tried ourselves.
My favorite things to cook
Baking, especially cookies, loaves and cakes
My favorite family cooking traditions
Hoping to have some soon with my family. I am a new mom. Need to talk to my husband's grandmother about getting copies of some family baking recipes.

Sugar Cookie Icing
This is a really good icing. I didn't find it excessively sweet. I used food colouring paste instead of liquid food colour. I like that the recipe makes a smaller amount at a time: easier to work with.

Pumpkin-Pecan Cake Roll
This is an easy yet impressive looking dessert. I mixed all my wet ingredients first to avoid overmixing later. The flavour is good although next time I would use fresh nutmeg to bring out that flavour a bit more. This was better after sitting in the fridge for a couple of days.

Home-Style Cheese Muffins
I'm sure I could have made great biscuits with this recipe. I added the cheese to the dry ingredients before mixing with the wet to minimize overmixing. I'm sure with a bit more mixing, I would've been able to roll this out. A full tbsp of baking powder seems like a typo. This is a decent base but isn't very flavourful. If I tried this again, I'd probably use half whole wheat flour, decrease the baking powder to a teaspoon and add cayenne pepper or oregano (approx 1/2 to 1 tsp). I made 6 muffins and 12 mini muffins. I baked the regular muffins for 22 minutes and the mini muffins for 15.
