My favorite things to cook
Pretty much anything but with a focus on health/heart. MIL is Indonesian, FIL is from Amsterdam, a BIL is Lebanese, my family of origin is Dutch and Irish/French and so many different food specialties/methods of cookery surround reunions. I enjoy being surprised by results/taste and am curious in the kitchen. I insist on efficiency and conservation of movement/energy when cooking, preferring to spend my time eating and enjoying instead of preparing, and then cleaning.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Many, but the best memory and what put me on the road to cooking well is making Christmas cookies with my mom in the kitchen when I was little. Those memories contain all the warmth and a connection with mom that a child could ask for - one of my earliest and best memories of just me and my mom. I know I made a mess - she never said a word - but I loved having her pretty face right next to mine and her hands guiding mine and showing me how to measure, how to pour the ingredients into the turning bowl, having her hold me while I stood on the chair, snowing outside, Christmas preparations being made, warm and smelling good inside. I will never never forget that.
My cooking triumphs
A few I am proud of.
My cooking tragedies
Oh my, many. A curious person often learns the hard way it seems, and sometimes what appears to be divine inspiration just does not make for heavenly results. But I have learned what not to do for many different kinds of cooking and types of food, and that has been a worthy place from which to branch out and experiment, with more likely successes.
And in the end - don't be afraid, it's just food.
