My favorite things to cook
Pasta, stir-fry, cakes & cookies. I love to find delicious recipes that use only a few ingredients, so I can teach them to my kids.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Christmas gifts- my mom's Mincemeat cake doused in rum, also rum or whiskey balls. Teachers get holiday shaped pretzels (from Sam's) dipped in white or dark chocolate & drizzled with the opposite chocolate. I make fudge too.
Pascha (Easter)- I bake Kulich (a fruit-filled yeast bread, like a pannetone) & make Pascha cheese, also fruit-filled & sweet.
Thanksgiving- The pumpkin pies are always made from our Halloween jack o'lantern, which I cook on Nov 1 & freeze.
My cooking triumphs
My first attempt at Chicken Kiev came out perfectly.
I had an awesome black bean salsa at a buffet, went home & improved it. It's now a standard request when I'm invited to parties.
I made Jerk Chicken,& after it went on the grill, I coudn't stand the thought of throwing out the wonderful marinade the raw chicken had been in. I mixed it with a couple pounds of ground turkey & made Jerk Turkey Balls. Now I don't even bother with the chicken.
My cooking tragedies
'That bread', which was an unfortunate loaf that turned out like a brick. I kept it in my freezer for a couple of years, and threatened to serve it to my husband whenever he made me mad.
