Broccoli Cheese Soup V

Reviewed: Dec. 4, 2009
This was easy to make and very good! I made a mistake early on because I didn't take the time to read through the recipe all the way. I didn't have cans of chicken broth so I just boiled fresh broccoli and added some chicken stock powder type stuff to the water. I didn't measure how much water I used because I thought I would just be draining the broccoli anyway (I was wrong). Then later it got to the point where I was supposed to add the broccoli mixture to the other mixture and I had already drained my broccoli. OOPS! That's what you get for not paying close attention and not reading ahead!!! So I just ended up making some more "stock" again and it worked out just fine. I didn't have enough velveeta and literally just ended up throwing in every type of shredded cheese I had in my fridge. The end result was delicious and I will make it again for sure! Thanks!

Ramen Noodle Frittata

Reviewed: Dec. 3, 2009
I really, really liked this. However my kids who love ramen hated it and my husband thought it was just okay. So instead of five stars I had to give it just four. I really liked this because it was so easy and something different. I cut the recipe in half and left out a small amount of the noodles because I thought it might get too dry with all of them left in. I thought the taste of this was just right and it lends itself to a million variations. Next time I'll try it with some peppers and other veggies. The only thing I think I'd change is using american cheese on top instead of cheddar. That's just me though because I have a thing about melted cheddar, I just don't really care for it. I prefer the way american cheese melts. Still though this is really good and really easy and for me those are both great things. I'm so glad I've found frittata recipes...now if I could just get my kids to eat them!!

Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies II

Reviewed: Oct. 29, 2009
These were just okay. I do have to say though that we did not have any vanilla so that could've played a big part. We didn't think they were any softer than any other cookies we've ever made. We were looking for a chocolate chip cookie similar to soft batch cookies. My family also thought these had a sort of weird floury taste which again could've been because of the lack of vanilla. We added some butterscotch chips to the last pan of them and that seemed to help. Pretty good recipe but I've had much better.

Deep South Fried Chicken

Reviewed: Oct. 29, 2009
I DID IT!!!! I finally did it! I finally fried chicken and it turned out!!! I did everything this recipe said however I didn't have an iron skillet so I just used the heaviest skillet I had and it worked out great. I also added some onion and garlic powder as well. Otherwise I followed these instructions and finally I have made chicken as good as my Grandma's! I always look for fried chicken recipes but they usually use bread crumbs and other stuff. I couldn't find one that was simple like this, just like my Grandma makes hers. So a million thank you's for this! Every single one of my three kids and my husband devoured this. I'm 30 years old and this is the first time I've actually successfully fried chicken...I'm a real grown up now!!

Almost Caramel de Lite Bars

Reviewed: Sep. 7, 2009
These were SOOOOOOO good! I love sweets and these were even rich for me. They are just like what we always called magic cookie bars except with a chocolate crust instead of graham cracker crust. I actually think it's much better and easier with the chocolate cake mix. I would've easily given these five stars but I wasn't a big fan of the marshmallow on it. I didn't like the gummy texture they got and I think it would've been better without it. Cannot wait to make these again!

Country Fried Steak and Milk Gravy

Reviewed: Aug. 7, 2009
YUM!! This was my first real success when it comes to frying meat. I've tried to make this on my own before with no luck. I think the one thing that really made a huge difference for me was that in another CFS recipe I read to make sure to have your oil or lard at 365 degrees. So I made sure to have it hot enough and had no problem at all with getting the breading to stick. The only changes I made were using "minute steak" which I believe is just way tenderized cube steak anyway. I also used oil instead of lard. As far as seasonings I added lawry's and that's it besides the S&P. I dreged the meat in flour the first time and let it sit in the fridge while for about 15 minutes, then I went ahead and followed the rest of the recipe. Let me tell you I was actually giddy when I put this meat onto the plate because it looked so awesome. I kept thinking since it looked so perfect it would probably taste bad but not so,it tasted as good as it looked. The gravy even turned out too. I would have preferred to have the regular white country type of gravy that you get at a restaurant but this tasted good still. I guess it just would've looked even nicer with the whiter gravy instead of a more brown color. That's really nothing to complain about though because this was so good. When I took it to the table my three year old exclaimed "It looks like truck stop meat!" Believe it or not I took that as a compliment because it really did look like restaurant food and tasted even better!

Omelet in a Bag

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2009
I made this last night and didn't have the best luck with it. Although I think it was probably my own fault. After I made it I looked back and saw it said two eggs and I had thought it was three. Well I used two whole eggs and two egg whites in mine. I used a heavy duty freezer bag and it held up fine other than at one point for some reason the zipper part of the bag would no longer stay closed which was a problem with keeping water out of the omelet as you could imagine. At the end of the 13 minutes the outsides were done and the middle was not. Again this was probably because I used too much egg. However there was another problem. The egg that was done, well much of it anyway, was stuck to the bag. So I'll have to try it again with just the two eggs because it's a good idea when you have a bigger family like mine with different tastes. Plus I like it because you don't have to use oil. It does take quite awhile though. Not really sure how long it takes to make an omelet normally but this seemed to take far longer.

Laura's Unbelievable Chicken and Pasta

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2009
We are a midwestern family who have grown up on things like hamburger helper with a side of canned green beans for our veggie. So I'm trying to do better with my eating. I recently bought a bunch of great stuff from a farmers market one of them being spinach that I wanted to use. Now I love spinach with almost anything but getting my husband to eat it is a different story, he's a meat and potatoes guy. So I made this however like others mentioned I made some additions. I added scallions, garlic powder, onion powder, fresh basil, and too many red pepper flakes. So ours was pretty darn spicy. Lucky for me we like spicy so it worked out. It was very very good. Next time I'll try to tone down the red pepper flakes though and maybe add some shrimp I think that would be good too. Plus this is major here, my seven year old actually WANTED to try this but alas, since I accidently made it too spicy she couldn't. So she's excited for me to make it again. That's a winner in my book!!

Tater Crisp Chicken

Reviewed: Mar. 25, 2009
Pretty good. I've made a few different kinds of oven baked chicken before and this is one of the better ones. Of course it's never as good as the real thing but you can't really expect it to be. Overall though if you add your favorite spices which is a must then this turns out to be very good. Both of my kids ate it which in my house is really saying something!

Zippy Ground Beef Skillet

Reviewed: Mar. 11, 2009
Can I give this ten stars? YUM!! This is probably the first recipe I've ever followed exactly as written and I'm glad I did because it was wonderful. This was exactly what I was craving! My husband and I both loved it. At first I wasn't sure about the honey because it just seemed weird to me but I added it anyway and I'm glad I did because it was great. There was just a hint of it that was sooooooo good! Also wasn't going to add as much chili powder but went ahead and did as recipe said and again it was great! Thanks so much for this recipe, now only if you could magically make my kids like it too!

Broccoli Casserole

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2009
I added chicken to make this into a meal. My husband and kids liked it but I just thought it was okay. The cheese whiz just tastes a little funky to me. I also cut down on the broccoli to suit my two year old. Otherwise I think it's a solid four star. I just want to add that I tried remaking this tonight with generic cheez whiz. Wow please DO NOT EVER use generic. After tasting it I'm afraid I may have to throw it all away because the taste of the generic cheese stuff is just plain awful. Too bad because this is a good for a family dinner.

Slow Cooker Italian Beef for Sandwiches

Reviewed: Feb. 23, 2009
Let me start by saying I am not a Chicago native, I actually grew up in Rockford Illinois. However even in Rockford there was nothing better than the awesome Italian Beef sandwhiches! Living in Iowa now for ten years I simply cannot find an Italian Beef on the menu at any restaurant and I totally crave them!!! So of course I was very excited to try this after reviews from actual Chicago natives giving this recipe a thumbs up. So I really really wanted to love this...but I didn't. I started out with two cans of broth and one packet of the Italian dressing. When I went to shred the meat it really had no flavor so I decided to add another packet of dressing. About an hour later we had our sandwhiches. Now don't get me wrong it was a good sandwhich, just not great, and certainly couldn' hold a candle to the Italian beefs I'm used to from back home and from many visits to Chicago. For me the Italian dressing was coming through too strong and I kept thinking about that pasta salad you make with the dressing because it was so very strong!Like I said though I did put in two packets when the recipe called for one so that's my own fault. However I did feel like with one packet it just had no flavor. So try this recipe for a good sandwhich just do not expect a great Chicago italian beef from your slowcooker. Thanks for the recipe though I think I may use it again in the future!!

Polka Dots

Reviewed: Feb. 7, 2009
OMG what can I say these are AWESOME!!! These are so good and easy I almost wish I never would've tried the recipe because my family and I have been eating and making way too much of these!! The first time I tried this recipe I actually only had a dutch chocolate cake mix and butterscotch chips. While I was making them I was worried but I shouldn't have. They turned out wonderful to say the least. My kids said they reminded them of chocolate soft batch cookies and they were right. I also tried them another time with chocolate/white chocolate swirled chips and they were okay but the butterscotch chips were better. The absolute best yet though was when we mixed in some sweetened coconut and butterscotch chips...perfection and so easy!! My next try will be with toffee chips and I'm sure they'll be good to. Thanks SO much for this super easy supper yummy recipe!

Chuck's Favorite Mac and Cheese

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2009
This was good for a change but still a bit too dry for my taste. Also a lot more work than I usually put into macaroni and cheese. I grew up on a creamy mac and cheese so I guess I'm just not used to the drier baked versions. Still good though.

Cola Onion Pork Chops

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2009
I really wanted to love this recipe but oh my goodness it did not turn out well for me. The pork chops were very tender which was great but they just tasted too sweet. The absolute worst part was the "gravy". It never thickened up at all for me. I thickened it a bit myself and when I tasted it wow was it sweet. I knew instantly that nobody was going to be able to eat that over potatoes. I tried to doctor it up but it ended up a waste. It was just too sweet to be a gravy would eat with potatoes.

Sweet Minglers

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2009
This is basically puppy chow without the butter. I'd always wondered if it would turn out without butter but I figured it would be gross so I never tried it. Well one night I came across this recipe and decided to give it a shot and boy am I glad I did. This came out just as great as any puppy chow I've ever made with butter but now with a lot less calories. Not that it's a healthy snack but hey leaving out the butter really cuts the calories without messing up the taste. I even had to use these chocolate and white chocolate swirled chips because it's all I had and it still came out great. Thanks so much for this recipe. Now I can stuff my face with puppy chow and not feel as guilty!! ;-)

Curly Noodle Dinner

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2009
I really wanted to like this recipe but in the end it just wasn't great. Honestly though I think a big part of that was because of the ramen noodles I used. I used a beef flavored package that was a brand I hadn't tried before. The beef flavoring of these was just really strange and I think that was the biggest problem. The other thing was that it just didn't look very appealing. I'm big on casseroles and skillet dinners and I don't need my meals to always look beautiful. This just really did not look appetizing at all. In the end I ate it but my husband and kids really didn't like it. My seven year old thought it was "really nasty hamburger helper." Again though I think this was in big part because of the ramen noodle flavoring. I'd like to try this againw with the oriental flavor that the recipe calls for but I don't think I could get my family to try it again.
