Bake Sale Lemon Bars

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2009
Unfortunately I took heed of all the reviews the first time I made this and used a smaller pan and ended up with an almost inedibly thick base and bars that were just too much. The second time I made these, I made them as written and they came out perfectly. My lemons were not very tart, so I doubled the lemon juice, on checking the batter.

Chocolate Orange Truffles

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2009
With amendment this recipe is quite good, but the quantities in this recipe are way off. I read all the reviews and proceeded with caution and with extra chocolate on hand. I ended up adding double the amount of chocolate the recipe calls for. By the time I was done adding little bits of chocolate after each time I let the mix cool, I was fed up, so I just rolled the truffles in cocoa, as is more traditional anyway. The end result is a really nice truffle, but beware of the quantities given.

Whipped Shortbread Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2009
This is a really rich and awesome cookie. The flavour is just like shortbread, but the texture is not - it is so much lighter. I made the cookies as written and rolled them into balls with oiled hands and baked (no cherries). Once they had cooled I half dipped them in chcolate. Yummy.

Peppermint Liqueur

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2009
As a South African I am familiar with what this should taste like and it is close, but not quite. The sugar syrup should be a 2:1 sugar:water mix and should be double this quantity as this is usually a thick and syrupy liqueur. I ended up using 3 cups of sugar to 1 1/2 cups of water. With that amendment it was spot on.

Marinated Peppers

These are excellent. Followed the recipe as is, but used dried herbs instead. Will make these again and might attempt to bottle them.

Sloppy Sams

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2009
I made this because we were having a vegetarian friend over for dinner and it was enjoyed by everyone. I changed the fresh tomato and paste for a can of tomatoes and reduced the molasses to 1 tbls, which was plenty, otherwise made as written. Served in floured baps with grated cheese.

Aloo Gobi

Reviewed: Nov. 9, 2009
We did not enjoy this very much, although we did eat it. I had trouble with the potatoes and cauliflower scorching on the bottom of the pan and ended up pouring in some water to save it all. I did use only one chile, as per the submitter's suggestion to adjust to taste. There seems to be a little something missing from the spice mix or maybe the quantities are out, but the flavour was off compared to other aloo gobi I have tried.

Salsa Ninety Nine (Mild)

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2009
I halved this recipe and still got 15 jars of salsa. It is a great and simple recipe, albeit time consuming to peel, core and chop all those tomatoes, let alone the onion and pepppers! I made this recipe exactly as written and will make it again this way in future, but may add more chili, as per the author's suggestion as I was worried about ending up with a too hot salsa. We have already made great salsa eggs for breakfast with this and served with sour cream and tortilla chips to our friends.

Caesar Salad Supreme

Reviewed: Sep. 13, 2009
Yum, my lettuce plants had produced so much lettuce that needed using that I gambled and fed a lettuce based salad to a group that included only 3 girls and a whole bunch of guys and it all disappeared! Yum, made exactly as written and no need to change anything.

Savory Cheddar Zucchini Muffins

Yum, I subbed out the butter for canola oil and otherwise made these exactly as written. These are yummy and I will make them again when I have zucchini to use up.

Ciabatta

Reviewed: Jul. 27, 2009
This recipe made a really delicious bread that I will definitely be making again. I do not have a baking stone, so I used the method I use for pizza - simply pre-heat a baking sheet and use the parchment paper to move the dough across. I am used to ciabatta with a more sour flavour, so next time I will let the starter sit longer and maybe in a warmer place. We had this with homemade pesto spread on it and the traditional olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip.

Georgia Dirt Bombs

Reviewed: Jul. 26, 2009
We loved these. They made 12 little popovers in my mini muffin pan and once rolled in the cinnamon sugar were yummy. Unfortunately my oven is hotter on one side than the other, so they were a little bit lopsided, but they tasted great. One thing I will do next time is while they are cooling in the pan for 5 minutes, I will cover with a kitchen towel, like with tortillas to prevent too much of a crust from forming as there is quite a contrast from the coating to the crust to the middle. A perfect breakfast for 2!

Quinoa and Black Beans

Reviewed: May 10, 2009
Wow, this was really yummy. I wanted to try quinoa and picked this recipe as it generally sounded good and what a good choice it turned out to be! I made this recipe exactly as is, but added 2 chopped tomatoes as that is one of the things I really like when I have black beans and rice, and who can argue with a slightly higher veggie count anyway? I will make this over and over again as it can be served as a salad, as a main for vegetarians, as a accompaniment, as a work lunch, and it can be served hot or cold.

Scones

Reviewed: May 10, 2009
I grew up having tea and scones with my English grandmother, but lost her recipe so I tried this one because it seemed similar. This recipe made really light, fluffy, tasty scones and I will make it again and again. I made this in the traditional English style with round cut-outs that I then split in half, buttered and spread with strawberry jam and topped with cream - delicious. A word to the not so hungry - I have halved this recipe (for the egg, beat in a measuring jug and use half) and have ended up with 7 good sized round scones.

Greek Lamb Stew

Reviewed: May 8, 2009
The flavour of this was very good, although I may use more lemon next time to get the zing I expect from Greek lamb dishes. Instead of chopped fresh tomatoes and tomoato sauce I just used to cans of chopped tomatoes and it worked fine. The sauce seemed to be a lot of very thin liquid, which I will thicken next time I make this as it just ran straight through the rice I served it with.

Omelet in a Bag

Reviewed: May 7, 2009
I've seen this recipe many times before and have tried it and one important thing seems to have been forgotten - use freezer ziplocs as they are stronger and will not break with boiling. Also, every time I have made this I have found the omelettes to be ready in less than the 13 minutes specified, so keep an eye on them and when they seem solid, they are done as overcooked eggs are nasty rubbery things to be avoided.

Zucchini Patties

Reviewed: May 7, 2009
We quite liked these. We made them with almost none of the cheese as we did not consider that necessary and wanted the flavour of the zucchini to come through. Added some chili flakes for lift and these were very good as a different veggie side.

Kettle Corn

Reviewed: May 7, 2009
I should have read the reviews first. It would have helped to know right off that try and have the sugar melt before adding the popcorn.... the flavour is nice and it went down well when we got it right, but you have to keep the pot moving to avoid a sticky mess on the bottom of the pot. We do, however, prefer more savoury popcorn so will not make this often.

Peach Kuchen

Reviewed: May 7, 2009
I wasn't sure how this recipe would turn out and was pleasantly surprised. I used fresh peaches as they were in season and should have cooked them more before using them in this as they were still hard when the base was browned. I used other reviewer's suggestions and tried almond extract and the overal taste was good, but not outstanding, although good served with custard. Will try this again with tinned peaches instead.

Lemon-Lime Mousse

Reviewed: May 7, 2009
I tried this for a dinner party because I could make it in the morning and leave it in the fridge and it was brilliant. I couldn't get any decent limes, so used only lemons. I suspect that depending on how sour your lemon and limes, you may need to adjust your sugar - for me it was perfect though. This is quite rich, so a little goes a long way for most people. Will definitely make again.
