I'm fifteen years old, and have been homeschooled my whole life (this year I've tried grade 10 half time). My parents have been teaching me how to cook and bake since I was little, but I only do stuff occaisonally so my supper-making skills still need work. I'm pretty good at baking stuff, though, and my cookies, squares, and muffins turn out just as well as my parent's versions do. I'm the most adventurous in cooking in the family, so if we try a new recipe it's usually because of me.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every year around Christmas, I help my Oma make croquetten, a Dutch food that is essentially meat paste rolled in bread crumbs and then deep-fried when you want to eat it. They're a lot of work to make, so we make them in big batches once a year. Sometime I'll have to learn the whole process so I can make them myself.
My cooking tragedies
I've been trying baking and stuff since I was quite young, maybe eight or nine, and once I decided to make blueberry muffins. Great idea - we all love them here. So I made the recipe, put them in the muffin cups and baked them. But when I pulled them out of the oven, they were still little, rock-hard balls of dough. I had forgotten to add the baking soda! They were completely inedible.
