About this Cook
Both of my parents worked lots, so I have been preparing my own meals for decades now. I love to cook, especially for my family. Father of two awesome kids under 10. Long time employee of allrecipes.com.
My favorite things to cook
Anything on the grill. Always looking for a better recipe for ribs or pulled port. Some of my favorite recipes from this site are: Spicy Red Bean Soup. Bacon Wrapped Dates. Queijadas.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Nearly all my childhood family gatherings were huge pot lucks. Both my grandmothers were awesome cooks, something I never really appreciated until they were gone and I tried to recreate those magic dishes.
My cooking triumphs
Any time I can get a whole meal on the table at the same time , while it's still hot. Turn off the tv, round up the family, not trip over toys in the process.
My cooking tragedies
I've had plenty of things fail on me over the years. Overcooked, Undercooked, Guests at the table eating salad already, entree burned. One of my first tragic memories of cooking, at about 8 years old I was cooking a hamburger on an electric stove. It was summer time, it was hot, and I was cooking without a shirt on. I flipped a burger into it's own grease and the splatter got me in the chest. Instant burn blisters. I often find myself cooking for groups of 50 or more people. My biggest cooking fear is inspired by The Death Scene at the end of Monty Python's The Meaning of Life; "How can we have all died at the same time" "The Salmon Mousse" "...to serve salmon with botulism at a dinner party is social death for me." I stay far away from all canned fish as a result of that.

Firecracker Grilled Alaska Salmon
It was great. Our neighbors have a pool and invited us over for dinner. I offered to bring all the food and cook on their grill. Who could pass on that offer. I had the cold leftovers for breakfast. I only marinated for 3 hours or so, but the salmon fillet was not that thick. Also, I am careful to pull out ALL the pin bones so the kids will eat it. That process leaves the flesh a little beat up at places for the marinade to get more surface area. The recipe says to flip the fish, that's crazy talk. I only cook with skin side down. I pull the fish when it's still pink inside, then remove the fish wrap it in foil to let the steam finish cooking without any loss of moisture.

Barb's Supreme Curried Ham and Egg Stacks
I am very happy with the results. This would be great for a special occasion, but way too much work for just an ordinary breakfast.

Jam Thumbprints
I've made this a couple of times now, loved them. Chopping and rolling in the nuts was the hardest part. Next time I hope to remember to fill the jam before baking for a better jam texture.
