The dough came out a little tough, but I loved the taste! Really wonderful scent and it got rave reviews.

Cocktail Meatballs III

Pretty darn good! I too added a little vinegar to the sauce, and it helped a lot. I like that it is one of the only recipes that works without a slow cooker, and works well.

Cream Cheese Frosting II

Delicious basic recipe, and I like that it is so easy and flexible. The other reviewers are right, though-- if you want a less cream cheesy frosting, make the butter and cream cheese in equal amounts!

Favorite Old Fashioned Gingerbread

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2009
Delish! I used a loaf pan and still cooked for just 45 minutes, and served with nutmeg whipped cream... the cake texture is moist, and the flavor is soooo wonderful. I followed other reviewers, and added double the spices-- and am glad I did!

Greek Penne and Chicken

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2009
Really delicious basic recipe. I used no artichokes at all, since my husband wouldn't touch them, but instead added plenty of oregano, 1/2 cup of chicken stock, and 1/2 cup of parmesan to the lemony sauce... then one pat of butter at the very end. It came out light, creamy and delicious, very flavorful without the marinated artichokes. And of course, you can't go wrong with feta, pasta, chicken, and tomatoes! :) A big hit.

Pear Pie II

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2009
Great way to use up almost-gone pears. I did use more than the recipe called for-- 5 instead of 3-- simply because that is what I had laying around and they were smallish. It worked beautifully. Used vanilla instead of almond, and it still came out superb. I was nervous about a custard filling being fiddly, but it was a breeze-- great recipe!

The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2009
Wish I could give 4 1/2 stars! The taste and texture of these is definitely a 5+... but the dough is soooo gooey, it is a pain to work with even after 3 hours in the fridge. It did get easier as it went, since I got more heavyhanded with flouring the work surface! :) All in all, the awesome taste wins the day!! 5 stars, big hit! *NOTE* I did NOT add extra sugar as some reviewers suggested. Maybe it would have helped the gooeyness? Still, in the end I like the lighter taste with just 1 cup-- especially since I frosted most of them. I suggest if you are frosting them, stick with one cup and use a lot of flour when you roll them out.

Stunning! I love apple pie, but never liked apple cake because it wasn't moist enough-- this takes care of that. Super easy to make, and soooo delicious.

Italian Meat Loaves

Reviewed: Nov. 29, 2009
I made these with pork, and they were absolutely delish. I did add more Parmesan than was called for, and I have to admit that my husband took the leftovers to work to heat up, and... not so great. But the night we had them they were hearty, healthy, and such great comfort food!

Yummy Sweet Potato Casserole

Definitely had to double the vanilla and the topping mix, but other than that... WONDERFUL! The brown sugar topping was a huge hit, it reheated beautifully, and I soooo prefer it to it's marshmallow topped counterpart!

Old Fashioned Strawberry Pie

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2009
Total deliciousness. I took the best comments from other reviewers and tweaked it this way: only one cup sugar (I tasted the strawberries first! critical step!), and I left out the cinnamon entirely, and added almost half a cup flour, not just 1/3. With the sugar and flour tossed around the fresh strawberries, it made the most delicious sauce inside, and just the right texture! Another tip: to make sure the inside was totally done, I did what my mom taught me to do with apple pie. High heat, as the recipe says, for 1/2 hour, then turned it down to 350 for another 20 minutes. It really cooks the fruit down nicely, the top crust is browned but not burned, and the bottom crust is fully cooked and flaky!

Marinated Turkey Breast

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2009
Okay, so the first time I made this, the flavors were totally overwhelming. I used smaller pieces of meat that time, and it killed the whole turkey taste. I tried it once more, this Thanksgiving, with a much larger piece of breast meat, and it was wonderful-- now I see what everyone was talking about! I did reduce the marinading time just a bit, but it made for a delicious and juicy piece of bird, and such a lovely alternative to a huge roast turkey!

Jay's Signature Pizza Crust

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2009
Great recipe, and so easy! I never thought homemade pizza would be my "lazy night" meal, but seriously, this stuff is additively good AND only takes a minimal effort to pull together. I made it for my new sis-in-law and her two little boys the other day, and they went on and on... the two year old just kept saying, "more, more" and banging his plate. This crust rocks!

Playgroup Granola Bars

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2009
My husband loves to eat healthy, so experimenting with desserts isn't great all the time. But THESE! They are so healthy, as whole grain as you dare to go, and like everyone says, totally versatile. I make them with lots of crushed nuts, usually, and have also tried them with peanut butter... any way you make them, they rock! The biggest tip I have is to be SURE they are done before you take them out. That varies depending on what goes in them. When I use lots of nuts, for some reason it can take 40 minutes to be cooked... with peanut better, 25. Go figure!? Anyhow, definitely keep an eye on these, and they will reward you with healthy deliciousness.

Perfect Sesame Chicken

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2009
I was dying for a baked version of this, so I looked at some of the reviews and thought, "OK, no problem!" But... there was a problem! The baking of the chicken with the frying crust was just awful. That said, the main thing I wanted was the sesame sauce recipe, and it was great! I used brown sugar instead of white, and it was just lovely... the right consistency, and easy to make. I guess if I want to go healthy and bake the chicken pieces next time I'll just bake them in a regular flour-egg-flour crust and then top them with the sauce. But the sauce is a definite keeper!!!

Lamb Chops with Balsamic Reduction

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2009
This was a good recipe, and in particular I appreciated the cooking time suggested for the lamb-- it was perfect! The glaze was nice, but I would say that unless you serve it over greens like some reviewers said, it is unnecessary. We had it for Easter and ate the lamb down with just a teaspoon of the sauce each, and it felt a bit shameful after THAT was the part that was the hardest work! Next time, I'll do it either with no sauce, or serve it over something like greens and use the sauce to its fullest.

Praline-Pumpkin Cake

Reviewed: Sep. 26, 2008
I normally don't bother trying company-placed recipes, but I was very happily surprised! I really wanted a cake that was a little bit fall, a little bit different, and for the birthday person I intended it for-- it couldn't be chocolate. So I gave this a try and I am SO glad I did. I did the cake as directed, except for 2 things: I didn't use pumpkin pie spice, I added some cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg to my own taste. And I didn't use the canned frosting-- the fact that they even suggested it is why I took a star off. I used a super easy cream cheese frosting recipe (on this site it is called Cream Cheese Frosting 2, I think) and the cake got rave reviews for taste and presentation both. Definitely adding it to my recipe box!!

Greek Chicken Pitas

Reviewed: Mar. 26, 2007
This was okay, but didn't live up to the idea. It was very dry and not that flavorful. It's way too much time in the pot for this amount of chicken with no liquid... the onions were blackened and gave it all a funky taste-- and I took it out an hour early! I would love to find a good recipe for a Greek Gyro, to get the meat tender and moist like slow roasting does... this is not it.

Absolutely wonderful! Moist like really good banana bread, but a little lighter, and just fantastic with the Bourbon Cream Cheese frosting. I will definitely make this again!
