Pasta with Yogurt Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2009
This dish was fantastic. I used labneh in place of plain yogurt and the result was very creamy. I served the sauce with sprouted grain pasta and stirred some fresh spinach into the sauce just before serving. I also sprinkled sumac over the plated pasta. This is something we will make often. Thanks!

Quick and Easy Pizza Crust

Reviewed: Dec. 9, 2009
We used almost all whole wheat flour and only 3/4 cup of all purpose flour but the result was still delicious. I was surprised that our pizza wasn't tough from all the wheat flour. Out of habit, I let the dough rise for 30 minutes. We will use this recipe again. Thank you.

Gimlet

One of my favorite cocktails! I only used fresh lime juice. I don't think the sweetened would be very good but I like sour flavors.

Creamy Vegan Hot Cocoa

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2009
Very delicious and it's a convenient recipe to have for the times I'm out of non-dairy milks. I added a little cinnamon schnapps for a kick. I will make this again but when I have non-dairy milk around, I will use it instead of water for the extra vitamins. Thanks!

Sweet Potato Biscuits

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2009
I agree with others that the recipe calls for too much salt. I used a scant 1/2 teaspoon and it was still a little too much. Other than that, I really liked these and will make them again. I was out of sugar and used honey and used soy milk instead of dairy milk.

Delicious Vegan Hot Chocolate

This was easy and delicious. I think this recipe is perfect. I used unsweetened plain soy milk. For extra fun, I added a bit of peppermint schnapps. I will make this again.

Yum. I had to use olive oil instead of margarine. I also used goat butter. Very beautiful too because they sparkle.

Authentic Middle Eastern Hummus (Chummus)

This was delicious. I halved the recipe but made it as written and we think it's great! In addition to sprinkling cumin, we also sprinkled some chili pepper powder on. Awesome!

French Bread Rolls to Die For

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2009
Easy and delectable. I made the recipe exactly as written. There's nothing that needs to be changed. I only baked them for 18 minutes and they were perfect! Soft texture inside and very crusty outside. In the future, I will make more and freeze the leftovers.

Mmm-Mmm Better Brownies

Reviewed: Nov. 6, 2008
Deliciousness! Instead of the optional walnuts, I used 1/4 cup each of raw cashews, shredded unsweetened coconut flakes, and vegan chocolate chips. I used an 8X8 pan and baked for 25 minutes. This is an easy recipe.

Traditional Pita Bread

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2008
Easy to make, but mine didn't puff. I did replace 1/3 of the flour with whole wheat and that could have been the cause. No problem though, I was just making them to dip into hummus. Delicious! *Edit to update* I made these again without using any whole wheat flour and they puffed! Perfect round puffy pita. I really love this recipe.

Baking Powder Biscuits II

Reviewed: Aug. 31, 2008
This recipe is very similar to the Betty Crocker recipe for baking powder biscuits but by using oil instead of shortening, a lot of fat is cut out. I used olive oil like another reviewer because it is what I had. I also didn't have buttermilk so I used soy milk with about a tablespoon of lime juice. Delicious!

Mom's Country Gravy

Reviewed: Aug. 31, 2008
This is the recipe I remember my mom and grandmother making; they call it sawmill gravy. I have made this several times and I always use unsweetened soy milk with great success. For more flavor, I like to add a bit of "Better than Bouillon" to the milk but, as previously mentioned, this recipe is exactly how my family makes breakfast gravy. Lately I have been sauteing mushrooms in the pan to make a yummy shroom gravy. Many thanks!

Baked Green Tomatoes

Reviewed: Aug. 8, 2008
These are a great alternative to fried green tomatoes. I followed the recipe exactly but after 45 minutes, the cornmeal on the underside was still raw and "dusty". I flipped them over, sprinkled with additional oil, and put them under the broiler. Some serving suggestions: use them on a sandwich instead of ripe tomatoes or stack them with chevre between slices and top with roasted red pepper aioli. Less messy, awesome.

Jalapeno Corn Bread

Reviewed: Aug. 6, 2008
Excellent recipe, even after I substituted soy milk for buttermilk. I omitted the sugar because I do not like sweet cornbread and it was perfect for my taste. Also, I added extra peppers for more spice but next time I think I will include seeds for real kick! I cannot wait to make this using buttermilk, thanks so much!

Blue Cheese Jalapeno Poppers

Reviewed: Aug. 5, 2008
These are very good. As written the recipe is a 4.5 but with minor improvement it is a five. The other reviewer was right and the panko didn't stick well to the peppers so I dredged them in flour before the egg. This helped significantly but I also decided not to replace the top half of the pepper because the panko stuck better to the cheesed top. I used a VERY potent raw milk roquefort, so with half of the peppers I mixed the roquefort with some neufchatel cheese to tame it. The mixed batch were my favorites and my boyfriend enjoyed the stinkier variety. Overall, very delicious and I like them better than "poppers" with cheddar. Thanks!

Hot and Sour Chinese Eggplant

This recipe is fantastic and tastes exactly like a dish I often ate while studying abroad in China! I did cut back a tad on the sugar and I also used twice the amount of chopped chili pepper called for. Thank you very much!

Spinach and Potato Frittata

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2008
Very delicious and easy to make. I used a mandoline to slice my potatoes, making them quite thin. I didn't have cheddar so I dabbed on some neufchatel cheese instead. Like other reviewers, I finished mine under the broiler because the bottom was getting perfect and I didn't want it to burn. I agree with others who say the recipe could use more garlic and onion. When it was served, I topped it with homemade mean green tomato salsa which is heavy on the garlic, my own secret recipe. Super yum, thanks for the recipe!

Buckeyes I

Reviewed: Aug. 3, 2008
Yummy! I cut down on the sugar a bit like other reviewers and thought that these were sweet enough. I didn't have toothpicks so instead of dipping, I swirled the melted chocolate on top... I guess I made reverse buckeyes. I used freshly made peanut butter. Very easy and healthier than store-bought peanut butter candies. Thank you!
