I was born in Hong Kong but moved to Toronto, Canada when I was 5. I am currently a graduate student living in Burlington, Vermont (USA), which means I'm doing a lot of cooking! On food: it's something you can enjoy preparing, it makes your kitchen smell fantastic, and you can EAT IT afterwards. Now that's not something you can do with a science experiment haha.
My favorite things to cook
I love to try new things, but have a soft spot for pasta, curries, breads, scones, and desserts.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We like to cook and eat healthy, nutritious, lovingly-prepared meals together at home. There's just not enough of that going around these days.
My cooking triumphs
In no particular order... (A) Fresh pear pie -- I was an apple pie fan until I made my first fresh pear pie (coincidentally, my first time baking), and now I am a pear pie fan. Mmm... (B) Honey vanilla challah -- My favourite reaction is, "You MADE this?" followed by the slices of bread rapidly disappearing. (C) Raspberry and white chocolate chip scones (a variation on Grandma Johnson's Scones) -- enough said.
My cooking tragedies
I tried to make tiramisu without mascarpone cheese. I threw in some cottage cheese? yogurt? - something, to substitute for it. Then I cut down on this, left out that entirely, and as a result, the tiramisu was a disaster. Recipes deserve respect! :(
I also once bought a box of pumpkin bread mix, only to discover that I had paid for all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg, all of which were in my cupboard already, of course. The bread tasted great but do I really need to pay for someone to mix all of that and put it in a box for me?
